FOUND!! WTB - X40 for 350 - 500 USD

My nephew is a student and I´d like to buy a X40 for him. A nice one, well preserved, in excellent condition.

Specification: 1,4 GHz CPU, 1 GB RAM, 40 GB HDD, b/g wifi, IBM warranty would be sweet.
Dock is not important neither system recovery in the hidden partition.

I am prepared to pay 300 - 500 USD; I hope it is an adequate amount. If I am wrong, please correct me.
If these machines are more expensive he will get my X21 ...

You will get a nice X3* series in that price range. It will be faster and there is less hassle with the HDD - although it's a slightly larger size.

That's debatable. I've had both and kept the X40 because I liked it a lot more. It's smaller, thinner and lighter. The X31 is a bit faster with a 7200rpm drive but one converts X40 to fast flash cards the difference in speed is not that big.

I have both. X31 is permanently crank, now I have to change the motherboard. X40 - no problems, lightweight, excellent battery.
Differences in speed are not so gigantic.

My personal experience says - buy a X40.

It depends on what cards you use. A good Addonics 2 card adapter costs around $30 and a good speedy 16GB card can be around $170. The second card can be a bit slower, so figure $60-70. Some tweaking needs to be done in order to install Windows/Linux but it's quite doable and instructions are available on this forum.

You definitely could but they end up being far more expensive per gigabyte. The 16GB one costs about $300 while the setup I proposed costs $200 and it gives you an option to add another flash card later on. That's a pretty sizable difference on an under $500 machine.

I have a x41 tablet for sale. It's used and in presentable condition. It is a Pentium-M Centrino 1.2GHz(ULV) X41 tablet (1866). Lenovo warranty until 2009/02/05.

It's fully functional and comes with a new IBM x41 tablet bag, a new trackpoint cap, two working batteries(one 4-cell and one 8-cell), and a AC adapter.

That is very true, especially when you consider the price of a x40, it's not worth it to invest too much in it. Point taken

I've got an X40 I'm going to sell. It's a 2371-6EJ model, which means it was a Japanese model.

Here are the specs: P M 1.2GHz LV, 760MB RAM, 40GB HDD, 12.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, Intel Extreme, IBM 802.11b/g wireless(MPCI), Modem (CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), Secure Chip, 4 cell Li-Ion battery, WinXP Pro
Note: Originally shipped with 256MB of RAM, this has 760MB installed. It also comes with a 4-cell battery instead of the 8 cell

Unfortunately, it only had a 1-yr warranty and that expired in 2005.

It has a new install of Windows XP and it's using the CD key from the sticker on the bottom of the laptop. It doesn't have the pre-boot area or the recovery discs.

It actually has a Japanese keyboard, but I can locate a US one to swap the keyboard with if you wish. It also needs a power adapter as I'm currently using the one from my T43 on it.

The computer is fully functional and in great shape cosmetically. I can get you some pictures if you wish. Looking for $350+shipping. Let me know if this is reasonable.

EDIT: I've also got an X41 for sale. 2525-E9E. Looking for $450+shipping for this one. This one has a warranty until Dec of this year.
