I think you'll only be able to use 1 x 1GB stick with what you already have - I believe that there is a stick (either 256 or 512MB) soldered into one of the slots that cannot be swapped with a larger one.

Kristian is right, the maximum you can add to a X40 is 1Gb, and PC2700 doesn't come in larger size anyway.
