I have a very nice T42, Model Number 2373-8ZU. It recently had the motherboard replaced by IBM and has a near new keyboard with no shine. Upgrades include a 120GB 5400 RPM Seagate hard drive and 1GB of RAM. This is a high-end model with a 1.7GHz Dothan CPU and 64MB ATI Radeon 9600 graphics.

Comes with the AC Adapter, port replicator (includes its own massive AC adapter), 6 cell battery (yellow, about an hour of runtime) and 9 cell battery (green, about 6 hours runtime).

The machine is in outstanding condition with only some very minor scuffs on the lid. Easily a. 8.5 or 9 out of 10. Sorry, no pics, I do not have a digital camera.

Cool, well, time isn't a problem... Doesn't need it atm.... I assume that it doesn't suffer from the random freezes the t4x series had since you've replaced the mobo...

It did after the first mobo swap, so they did it again and used a new rather a "serviceable used" part.

Works flawlessly now, fast and stable.

Trying to save enough to buy me one of those

I have bought several T42's from the USA, and have had them shipped to me here in Copenhagen, Denmark - using USPS. The shiping cost for sending a T42 from USA to Denmark (insured shipment) using USPS is around $40.

But what about taxes, vat, duty or whatever... Doesn't that have to be collected by the carrier before the item can be deliverered?

If importing an item from abroad (in this case from outside the EU, e.g. from USA) into Denmark, the item will be be added import-VAT by the Customs Service upon the arrial into Denmark (at the border inspection/control). In Denmark this VAT amounts to 25 % (!), and is paid by the recipient at the delivery. Therefore, a seller in e.g. the USA shipping a T42 to e.g. Denmark will not need to worry about the VAT in the destination country - this is a "problem" for the buyer only. The VAT is calculated using the declared value (or the insured value) that is stated on the customs form following the shipment. There are many attemmpts made by recipients to obtain lower import-VAT, by e.g. declaring a shipments' value to be lower than what it in reality is - or to have items shipped as "gifts" and/or with "value" specified to be zero. If the customs people find it strange that, say, a brand-new ThinkPad is only specified (on the cuctoms declaration form) to be worth, say, $100, they may contact the recipient to prove in writing that this value is correct (asking the reipient to send copy of an invoice in the form of a bank-transfer payment or a PayPal-invoice or something similar). If an item is sent as a gift, the customs people may require the recipient to provide in writing proof of the e.g. family-relation to the sender, who has shipped an expensive "gift".

Bottom line: Import-VAT is an economical burden only for the recipient.

yes that's fine for an honorable and reliable buyer... but if the buyer refuses to pay the vat, the item gets returned to the seller at additional expense... then the buyer can very successfully request a full refund from paypal or c/card for a non-delivered item (and will ALWAYS win a full refund, including shipping, if the item is back in the possession of the seller), and the seller is out $100+ for the cost of shipping it overseas plus back home again plus customs brokerage.

What you say here may in principle occur - but as (enormously!) evident from the thread Positive feedback for FAIR Traders the people who meet and trade here are honest adults, who keep everything out in the open, and in particular know what they are doing, so I really don't think it is necessary to dwell any further on the issue you raise here.

... and in my opinion, you may always have concerns of this or that (based on your conditioning and past experience), but this place is NOT eBay - this is forum.thinkpads.com! - so very honestly I don't think you need to waste any energy on being worried about trading here - it may pay better off to focus your worries elsewhere...

Still for sale. I can sell this for $375 if you want an 80 GB instead of the $120 GB hard drive, with which the T42 is $400 shipped. 120 GB has the recovery partition intact, 80 GB is OS only, no recovery partition.

would you consider selling it without a harddrive for a lower price?

Its a really sweet T42. I just don't need it as I've been stood down from deployment and don't have to hire my replacement.

I also have a primo R60 which I am deciding whether to keep or sell. It has a terrific NMB keyboard and the brightest LCD (only XGA though) I've ever seen on a non-Flexview Thinkpad. Only a Celeron, but runs great with XP. Will post on the list if there is interest.
