i have TWO S30's..
a USA model with the piano black finish and built in wifi and a japanese model with ethernet and a wifi pcmcia card..
these things are quite collectable..
the USA model has an unrecognized M/T and no serial number which seems to indicate it was made for an IBM exec.. maybe lou..?
or the head of the PCD..

404 dollars for a pentium3 600mhz. That's a little high isn't it? What makes this so collectable then?

They are very rare in this condition...and still hold a very high place on my personal "must have someday-one day-time's not so far away" list...along with 240Z and Transnote...

The Canadian dollar was higher last week; it was closer to 260 USD, and must have been even higher with Paypal's exchange rate rip-offs.
Curious to see two S30s come out of Canada in a short time span... these aren't exactly common.

I'm pretty sure there was no USA model. They were made for Japan and a couple of other Asian markets (Taiwan?). Don't think they sold anywhere else which is why they're so rare.
I used to have one good one and one parts machine both of which I sold on this forum. Neat little systems.

Yep, that's me! I'm wondering if an US English keyboard was ever made for the S30? If not, do you guys think it's possible to replace each key individually, e.g. keys from a TP240? If I'm stuck with the Japanese-English keyboard, then I'm sure I'll resell it after a short while. But if I can change to an English-only keyboard, then I might keep the laptop.

yes, I ha done s30 with a REAL US keyboard, without japanese kanji and correct keys placement.
I order it from a japanese shop, but you might end up getting them directly with IBM. it is the same place from which I get the extra new battery.
Here is a link to yahoo japan auction where you can get very good bargain:

and if you want to buy one of them, use this website, they can buy JP stuff for you with little extra price:
