Prices for A31 and A30 laptops

#1 Post by ja355 » Sat Aug 16, 2008 10:29 am

I have two A31 thinkpads that I'd like to sell. Each has something wrong with it, though:

Thinkpad 1: A31 2652-Q3U P4 2.0Ghz SXGA+ 1400x1050 (IPS), no ram, 40GB HDD, CD/DVD-ROM, no operating system

Thinkpad 2: A31 2652-M3U P4 1.8Ghz, SXGA+ 1400x1050 (IPS), no ram, 40GB HDD, CD/DVD-ROM, no operating system

The Q3U has a strong red tint for a couple of minutes after starting up (bad backlight?). The M3U has a loud whine from the lower right corner of the screen that is silent when the screen is off (bad inverter?). The Q3U also has a few cracks in the plastic around the IO ports in the back. Both laptops work great with Ubuntu 8.04. They both are in nice condition other than the above mentioned problems and some minor scuff marks on the outside. I also have two batteries that hold about 1 hour of charge each.

I was thinking of swapping inverters to get one good screen and one bad screen, putting that screen on the Q3U, and selling it with a docking station. Also, I was going to sell the M3U with the bad screen.

My question is: if I get RAM for each of them and perform the modifications above, what sorts of selling prices can I expect? On the other hand, if I sell both as-is, what can I get for them?

I'm also thinking of selling the A31 2652-Q3U that I'm currently using, which is identical to the one listed above, except it doesn't have any problems other than one of the two USB ports in the back is missing the plastic connector in the middle (the four metal prongs are just suspended inside the connector); the other USB port works great. How much could that laptop bring?

I also have an A30 2652-44U P3 1.13Ghz, XGA, CD/DVD-ROM, but no ram, HDD, or operating system. The system powers on and gives the beeps indicating there is no RAM. There doesn't seem to be any odd noises. I don't have RAM, but I'm not sure if it's worth it to get RAM and see if it boots up fully. How much could I sell this laptop for?

One more question: each of the A31 laptops have an XP sticker and the A30 has a Windows 2000 sticker with a product key code. I bought the laptops without an operating system on them and didn't receive any fancy holographic certificates or anything. Can I install XP and 2000 legally on these laptops, or did the seller retain the licenses to Windows on these systems?

Thanks so much!

Jason

Welcome to the forum!

First of all, since you're new here, I strongly suggest that you provide some type of references, like eBay or heatware. if you're intent on selling stuff...

Now, to your machines:

2653-Q3U in its current shape is worth somewhere between $125 and 150 IMHO. Add a bit more, like $25 or so for M3U in its current condition.

A30 is worth $100 as it is right now.

And yes, you can legally install the OS you have the COA for, that follows the machine, not the owner.

Good luck.

I haven't sold anything on ebay or heatware, but I'll provide whatever information anyone wants on the hardware. I am strictly honest (but I suppose everyone *says* that). If someone is local around Des Moines/Ames area of Iowa, they are welcome to stop by and examine the machines before buying.

A30 is worth $100 as it is right now.
Thanks for the estimates! With a good screen, how much would that up the value of the Q3U (i.e., if I put the M3U's screen with the Q3U inverter in it)?

Thanks,

Jason

As is, I'd agree with the prices mentioned. However, I'd say it's worth putting together a complete working unit from those parts systems, then selling the remainder as a unit or broken down further into parts.

A nice A31 with those spec.'s should sell over $200, I'd say.

If all you need is RAM to bring them to life, PC2100 sodimms are inexpensive. I'd be happy to supply two 256MB PC2100 sodimms, pulled from ThinkPads for $11 delivered. PM me if interested.

Welcome to the forum and good luck.
