**SOLD**: Toshiba 3110CT Laptop - Ultraportable - Cheap!!

#1 Post by Harryc » Fri Oct 10, 2008 9:04 am

I took a look at my upgrade funds this morning :). It's time to sell my favorite toy. I have a Toshiba 3110CT ultraportable in mint condition for sale.

Here are the facts;

Condition: Used
Processor Type: Intel Pentium II Mobile
Brand: Toshiba
Processor Speed: 300 MHz
Screen Size: 10.5 inch
Processor Configuration: Single Core
Operating System: Linux
Memory (RAM): 128 MB (MicroDIMM, upgradeable to 192MB)
Primary Drive: 3.5" Floppy Drive
Hard Drive Capacity: 6.4 GB

Here's the fluff;

It is 100% intact, no missing covers, a couple of light scratches on the lid, no dead pixels, and the LCD is nice and bright. It includes a Toshiba port replicator, a matching external Toshiba floppy drive, and an AC adapter. It does not have a wireless card, but you can run a wired Ethernet connection through the port replicator. It takes any Cardbus PCMCIA WiFi card. The battery holds a charge for @ an hour. It weighs less than 4 lbs. Puppy Linux is currently loaded and runs very well on this machine.

Here are the visuals;

Here's the terms;

$75 shipped to the continental US. Paypal preferred. This is a great deal on a fun little laptop.

I can second that these are fun little laptops. Perhaps the only real shortcoming in modern use is the 800X600 screen resolution, but other than that, these are very small, light and surprisingly fast given the spec.

With a new battery you can push close to 3 hours on a battery charge and with 128 MB and Windows 2000 there are really no performance bottlenecks. I used to use a 3Com wifi card with the X-Jack connector, which was essentially the same as built-in wifi.

These are durable too, I was a cop when I owned it, and I really beat it up everyday without incident. Stronger than the X22 I eventually replaced it with. Smaller and lighter too.

Please, somebody buy this, so that I don't end up with it. These are really great machines, but I do NOT need another laptop PC.

I'm basically a computer ignoramus, especially where Linux is concerned. I can get by on a Thinkpad with Windows, hooked up to a docking station, and that's about it. Can this Toshiba run the later versions of WordPerfect? How do I load it? I'd love something this portable to throw in a bag and tote around, ready to write something on it.

Thanks.

From the Corel site - see below for Wordperfect Basic requirements. I'd say that it is beyond this machines capabilities. In a used ultraportable, you should be looking for a Thinkpad X30 or better. This machine was designed for Windows NT or 98. It would run Win2k, but slowly. It just so happens to be a very nice light Linux machine as well. If someone is interested in Windows 98, I could probably arrange to install that, but then again, I am giving this away for 80 bucks shipped, so how much more work do I need to do :).

System Requirements

* Windows Vista® Home Basic, Home Premium, Ultimate, and Business (32 Bit and 64 Bit) or Windows® XP Home, Media Center, or Professional Edition (with latest Service Pack and critical updates)
* 256 MB RAM (512 MB required for Windows Vista)
* 466 MHz processor (Pentium® III or equivalent processor recommended; 800 MHz processor required for Windows Vista)
* 600 MB hard disk space for full installation of all included applications
* Super VGA, 16-bit color monitor with 800 × 600 or greater resolution
* CD-ROM drive
* Mouse or tablet
* Microsoft® Internet Explorer® 6.0 or higher

If you are interested I could sell you all the (original) 1.44mb floppies for WordPerfect 6.01. That runs under DOS. You would not even need Windows.

With 128MB of RAM installed (64 on the board and 64 chip - easy to find on eBay) you can very comfortably run Windows 2000.

Little known fact about these is that you can actually push them to 192MB of RAM by buying a 128MB module for the Portege 3490CT, which works great (I know, mine was so-equipped).

With Windows 2000 and 192MB of RAM you could run WordPerfect 11 very comfortably, if you have a little patience as launch will be sluggish.

Is it possible to put Windows XP on it? I have a friend who is looking for a sub $100 laptop with Windows XP.

XP will install, but it will be a bit slow. Also, they would need a Toshiba PCMCIA optical drive. There is no optical drive included with this package and it will not boot from a USB Optical drive. If you are asking if I will install XP, yes but not for that price. An XP license alone costs more than $80. PM me if you are still interested.
