Would be interesting to see how does this drive compares to the good old 60Gb Hitachi 7200 7k60 or 7k100 in terms of performance.

Anyone tried both?

I have been happy with the Seagate drives. They have good pricing both at Newegg and Frys. The speed of the 5400 Seagates is excellent. The warranty is five years and they have good reviews. The WD drive is a really great price but I noticed the reviews were not very good.

I value my time and don't want to spend it restoring my laptop. Newegg is a great vendor and I use them most of the time. But, since you can't get 7200 rpm drives anymore (that I know of) you will not be disappointed by the large 5400 drives. They perform very well.

If you look on the web some newer Seagate desktop drives had problems with freezing and Seagate refuses to acknowledge this saying they don't support Linux which pure bs because it's an ATA problem. That is not a good way for a company to behave. Of course it doesn't mean their laptop drives are as bad but beware.

I have been using WD drives in desktops and certain laptops, so far so good. My miniPC runs the 250GB IDE drive in question (upgrade from a similar WD 120GB disk). Performance is quite decent, not as fast as a 7200rpm drive I reckon but way more space. The drive in my miniPC has been running for about 2 months now, so far 0 problems (knocking on wood 3 times). 120GB was in there for over 1 year, again 0 problems.

My T42p runs this same drive and I've been happy with it. I had a 60 GB 7200 RPM on my T40 before and there is a slight speed difference. Unless you are comparing the two side by side, you probably wouldn't notice though. Aside from being more available, the WD has just over four times the storage space, which is a must for me.

When I swap out a Seagate 5400.2 60gb to a Hit 7K60 60Gb in my T40p I saw a very noticable performance improvement. I guess the huge increase in platter density finally offset most of the rotational advantage then? If that's the case, everyone who still has laptop that takes pata hard drive should stock up on this drive before they stop producing the pata drive all together.

I hope that hard drive linked in the first post is the right one for my wife's T-42P. I just ordered one. Laptop corrupted windows and we are going to try to save her stuff off it and then install the new hard drive and re-install XP pro.

Yes, it'll work perfect. I have two of them running in 2 of my T42p's right now.
