SOLD - Two 240X machines (Linked Pics) - SOLD

#1 Post by virge » Tue Nov 18, 2008 6:39 pm

I picked up a 240X from another forum member in a swap. I then purchased a parts machine for cosmetic parts. Both are now available for sale because although I like the form factor, it runs a little slow for me and I'm still too chicken to remove the onboard ram even with a parts machine to practice on. Maybe someone with more guts wants both machines? :)

Machine One: 2609-61U. PIII 500Mhz. 192mb memory. 40GB 5400 HDD. External floppy. Modem replaced with Intel 2200BG and antennas installed in lid. Range is okay, but not great. AC adapter. Good extended battery (about 2 hours). Cover shows significant wear with one small fracture near the IBM logo (circled in red). One very, very light bruise on the LCD (circled in red). Asking for $150 shipped within U.S. -$25 if you don't want the HDD. $-25 if you want the original modem and not wifi.

Machine Two: 2609-51U. Celeron 450Mhz. 64mb memory. No HDD, but caddy, connector, and cover are included. No floppy. Cracked LCD. Keyboard very worn. Missing one lid latch. No AC adapter. Extended battery has one or more bad cells (dies at about 60% I think). Intermittent booting-- flexing the base almost always makes it work again, but will lock up eventually. Acts similar to a bad GPU in the T4x machines. This is a complete parts machine. Asking for $25 shipped within US.

Two questions.

One, how hard is it to find LCD's for these things?

Two, on the broken one, do you think the only way to fix the intermittent booting would be to replace the system board?

Thanks! :D
560, 560, 560, (all in various stages of completion/possession of a screen) 600E that's pretty dead, and a spiffy new X61 Tablet.

1. Fairly difficult because this was not a very popular machine. Also, there were two screen types-- A and B. B being the brighter and probably harder to find. The lids are different for these models. The working machine has a B display. The broken one an A display.

2. I'm pretty sure it needs a replacement. I've tried all kinds of things including baking the board. Nothing's fixed it obviously, but it does boot more consistently now. I think there is a loose solder point somewhere.

I think the broken machine is more suitable for someone who needs parts such as the hard to find hdd connectors or the LCD cable. You'd be better off purchasing the working machine rather than fixing the broken one. Want to make me an offer? :D

Do you know if the LCD cable is the same for both screen types? I have a 240x where the display gets erratic and moving the lid back and forth sometimes clears up the image on the screen. Haven't had a chance to open it up to check, but would be good to have the parts on hand just in case!

The LCD cables are different between the two types. You should check to see which type of LCD you have. The broken one I have is a Type A. If yours is a Type A, then send me a PM. :D

From the HMM:
LCD Type A:
All ThinkPad 240X computers that have serial numbers
whose last five alphanumeric characters are "B0586" to
"YZZZZ" are fitted with Type A panels.
LCD Type B:
All ThinkPad 240X computers that have serial numbers
whose last five letters are "ZAAAA" to "ZZZZZ" are fitted
with Type B panels.
Current Thinkpads: 600E, 600X, 701C, A31 (Flexview), R51 (Flexview), R60, T42P (Flexview), TR50E, T60 (Flexview), X61s (Ultralight), Z61m (Ti) Non-Thinkpad: Toshiba 100ct

... unless someone swapped the lid/lcd assembly before it got to you.

Edit: Both machines sold!
