[No longer FS] 14.1" UXGA T42

#1 Post by pianowizard » Mon Dec 15, 2008 1:21 pm

Up for sale is an extremely rare IBM Thinkpad T42 in very good condition. It's rare because I believe it was the world's first 14.1" T4* Thinkpad with a 1600x1200 display. It's probably also the world's lightest 1600x1200 laptop. Cosmetically, it's about 9.2 out of 10. Among the 45 Thinkpads I've owned (see this thread for a list), this is probably my favorite, but I want to sell it because I evaluated my computer needs recently and decided this one is no longer required. I have had this laptop since Aug 2007 and haven't had any issue. I uploaded some photos to this site. Detailed specs:

Product code: 2373-B09

1.6GHz Pentium M processor (Dothan)

2GB PC2700 RAM

100GB 7200rpm HDD (this alone is worth over $100 these days because 7200rpm PATA HDDs aren't made any more.)

14.1" 1600x1200 (UXGA) display (bright and looks almost new; haven't noticed any dead pixel. There are several very small -- less than 1mm^2 each -- glue residues on the screen, which aren't noticeable once you power up the computer. These spots are too subtle to be photographed.)

64MB ATI Radeon 9600

CD-RW/DVD drive

IBM 802.11a/b/g wireless (Atheros)

1Gb Ethernet

modem

two USB2 ports

PCMCIA slots

UltraNav

Secure Chip

6 cell Li-Ion battery (holds 37.5 Wh of the original 51.84 Wh, i.e. 72%)

Windows XP Pro COA sticker

Recovery CDs

AC adapter (it's the small, 56W AC adapter, to minimize the travel weight. It barely gets warm and I haven't had any problem.)

Two issues:

**There is a tiny crack in the metal between the modem and the TV-out port. It is so subtle that my camera cannot capture it.

**The display sensor was removed to make room for the LCD ribbon. The consequence is that you can't get the laptop to sleep/hibernate/shut down by closing the lid.

Price for the complete unit as listed above: $400

Subtract the following amounts if you don't need:

1) AC adapter --> subtract $10

2) RAM --> subtract $18 per module

3) hard drive --> subtract $70

Payment methods:

1) If you pay with personal check or money order, shipping is free!

2) If you use PayPal (credit card okay), please add the actual postage. For Priority Mail within the U.S. insured for $400 coverage, actual postage would be $14.85.

3) If you pick up in person and pay cash, I will knock off $15.

Please PM me if you are interested.

I was just in P-topia on Saturday for the RISD show and Sicilia's pizza, but I'm just up the road in Boston.

Scouting for a new (old) T-pad and wondering about UXGA . . .had a T41 SXGA and found it too small, screen nav was slow because of having to cover so much real estate with da maus. I'm hardly a power user but would love the chance to see your machinery.

What's yer sked for later this week?
Thanks
David

David, you are welcome to stop by to take a look. My schedule is flexible this week, except for Tue and Thu. PM me to set up a time. If you decide to buy it, you get a $20 discount because you would be picking it up in person. Regarding the mouse, did you go to Control Panel to increase the speed of the pointer? With the speed maximized, I find the pointer fast enough even for my 3-monitor setup at work, which has 2048x1536 + 1920x1200 + 1600x1200 pixels!

At one point, I did hook up my QXGA T43p to a WUXGA and a UXGA external monitor, one through the built-in VGA port and the other via this USB video adapter. But what my last post referred to is my Dell Dimension B110 desktop driving three monitors. You can read about the external QXGA LCD in this thread.

I dropped the price for the complete unit to $415, while adding another 1GB stick to max out the RAM to 2GB. If you don't need the RAM, HDD and AC adapter, you pay only $299!!!! dwallace, what are you waiting for?

Here is the final price drop, to $400, i.e. $385 for local pickup, $400 shipped if you pay with money order or personal check, or $400 plus postage if you use PayPal. Again, take off $70 if you don't need the HDD, $18 per RAM stick if you don't need it/them, and $10 if you don't need the AC adapter. I will not reduce the price any further. If it doesn't sell, I will just keep it and sell my Sony Vaio K23. I've owned dozens of Thinkpads and this is my favorite, so I will not sell it for any less.

Thanks for the offer but I had a 14.1" SXGA+ T60 for a while and like this T42 more.

Dear pianowizard,

Unless you are really in need of money, I'd suggest keeping your worthy T42 until the economy gets better. Hard times do hit us, as we can observe, since the Marketplace seems way less active than it used to be. Best wishes and good luck !

DrThinkpad, thanks so much for the advice. You're absolutely right, this laptop is worth a lot more than what I'm asking for. This is simply the best Thinkpad I've ever owned, with the best looks and the best balance between weight and display resolution. It doesn't make sense to sell it while keeping the Sony K23. So, this T42 is no longer for sale. I will keep it in my mom's home in TX.
