What symptoms are machines showing to make you believe that the inverters are bad and not something else?
I do have one of those inverters available, but would like you to be sure that it's the inverter that you need before I start ripping the LCD apart.

One of the machines has had two replacements under warranty (when we had an onsite service plan). I bought it for personal uses a couple of years ago from the company and used it until about 6 months ago the screen did its "fade to red" when cold and eventually quit. You cam shine a bright light at the right angle on be screen and see that it is working. I then bought another identical machine (it was a really good deal and I liked the original box). It has worked fine up until yesterday when it all if a sudden has the dark screen symptoms the other one has.
Btw, both machines will drive an external monitor just fine. I use these things in doing in-car tuning and testing, so they aren't babied or coddled. I really like them for this purpose!
Does that sound like I'm on the right track with the inverter?

You're on the wrong track. What you need is backlight replacement.

Hmmmm. Is there an easy way to test? And which backlight?

There is only one CCFL (backlight), and there is no reliable way to test it. Listen to George, if he says it's a backlight issue, then it is. You'd have a hard time finding a more experienced A31P authority in the world. Red tint is a classic pointer to a backlight issue.

When I say "which" I mean "what part number". I need a replacement. I know there's only one ccfl.

Ah, check out a 3rd party vendor like Moniserv for a CCFL. Lenovo doesn't sell just a backlight.

Cool! You folks are really on the ball! Thanks! I'll scrounge around and see if I can find a part number.
