What I am asking is some help ascertaining what someone who understands all the differences in the thinkpad line would consider a good deal from the deals currently available on the board. I am not that familiar with the Thinkpad line. I do need a good screen, of the 15" variety.

Not sure what "good" means (no scratches or high resolution or both), but this is a nice machine -> http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=71450

I also have an absolutely mint Z60m that I haven't listed yet (15.4" WXGA LCD) that will be about $350, you can PM me for the details if you're interested.

You should probably list all of your requirements so people can help you find a good deal.
e.g., 15" screens come in XGA, SXGA+ and UXGA resolutions (+ the widescreen variants, if you like widescreen). What resolution are you comfortable with? (e.g., I would not take anything below UXGA or WUXGA, but your eyes may not like it (because of the high resolution)).

15" SXGA no need for widescreen

You may want to do what ranchmom5 did and solicit feedback on what would be a good Thinkpad for your needs and budget. Then you can open a new WTB (want to buy) thread, similar to this one: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=71460 and state all your requirements

If you want an IPS LCD, then T43.

If you want a Core Duo CPU, R60.

Or add a few bucks and get both in a T60.
