considering it is very clean and say an 8 on a scale of 1-10. Can a warranty still be purchased after the original one has expired?

With no warranty, probably no more than $600-650, depending on the condition. A lot of people consider the WSXGA+ LCDs on these units to be the worst imaginable...
From what I recall, a two-year extension on an unit where the warranty has lapsed was $249, and it extends it to the total of three years from original shipment date. Namely, if the warranty expired in April of 2008, extension would cover the machine through April of 2010.
