WANTED: A31p UXGA Screen, jack repair
WANTED: A31p UXGA Screen, jack repair
Need an A31p screen, also some place that does backlights under $100 & power jack repair. Thanks.
Re: WANTED: A31p UXGA Screen, jack repair
Backlights for under $100 is a tall order due to the amount of work/time involved in the repair, not to mention the risk of completely trashing someone's machine. In fact I only know of one guy who does it commercially and he advertises on this forum for $150. http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=48458
Here's another alternative for under $100?

The power jack is a soldered in component on an A31, and you have to take the systemboard completely out of the machine to do it. Again, time consuming. I'd try James (Jamiphar) on that as well, or maybe one of those EBay jack repair guys.

Thanks, I saw that one on ebay yesterday BEFORE the guy raised the price, it was $10 cheaper yesterday morning before I clicked to "watch" the item! I have a lot going on here taking care of a dying mom and I don't know if I can get to performing the swap within his 3-day warranty period.Harryc wrote:Backlights for under $100 is a tall order due to the amount of work/time involved in the repair, not to mention the risk of completely trashing someone's machine. As for the backlight route, yes I have seen his thread here but it's getting almost cost prohibitive anymore... I think he started doing it at around $75 and the price has doubled over the year or two he's been doing it but the lamp is still around $10. It's hard to spend $150 on 6 yr old machine that sells for around $200-$225.
We are really limited income here too, just minimal SS and she's dying, I'm handicapped & need back, knee, ulnar & carpal operations--if I put her in a nursing home to get my ops we risk losing everything including the house, plus may never get her back. Sorry for getting so personal. Plus, the jack problem is on 1 machine and the backlight is on a different machine, though we have an intermittent video problem with pink & green lines on the "jack" machine, maybe a bad or pinched cable or something.... if I squeeze the frame of the LCD a certain way the lines disappear. I bought the 2nd machine for $200 to use while the first was to be repaired because we couldn't be without a computer for more than a day or 2. The 2nd one is actually more powerful than the original one. We have no other computers, no desktops.
Thanks for your help/understanding.

Your "pink and green lines issue" is a loose GPU...
New motherboard or solder re-balling/re-flowing is in order.
Good luck.

Why would it be a GPU problem on the motherboard if squeezing the LCD panel trim near the ThinkPort (top area of LCD panel, generally, between the latches) makes it go away?
