Hallo forum members,

What I am looking here is an upper system board for Thinkpad 701 C or 701 CS. It is the system board which has the battery charging circuit embedded.

Unfortunately these machines have been sold with NICD batteries outside the US which destroy the system board.

It may be helpful if you have a FRU number for those people who don't know what the "upper system board" is supposed to be...... people like me.

I have a 701C parts machine with a good motherboard, but I've never been inside the machine. The cost of shipping an entire machine to Europe would be cost prohibitive!

FYI, the machines sold in the US had leaky batteries too.

I have done a research and the part number should be :

04H8343 This is the upper system board.

Of course I know that worldwide shipping is expensive but I have had various good experience with PRIVATE 'US' purchases. I know they could send cheap via USPS, i have bought lower system boards and bezels and they managed to ship via USPS letter for as low as $15. On the other side US COMPANIES have tried to force highest shipping rates ever estimated and use only most expensive parcel services without any understandable reason.

As far as I know IBM has used NIMH and modem board in US market, NICD and no modem board in European markets. Teh NICD damages the battery contacts and loading circuits.

If the battery technology is different are the charging circuits the same between the US boards and those in Europe? I know that the 701C machines I have seen, the batteries have a tendency to leak as well. Some leak near the terminals, others leak at the other end. Leaks at the terminals could easily damage the machine. I'd take apart the 701C I'm selling for parts, but I don't have the tools. It uses a tiny torx driver which doesn't seem to be included in any of my tool sets.

I assume the upper boards and circuits are the same for both batteries, because there is only one part number if memory serves me well. NiCD and NIMH are often interchangeable not only in computers.

To take it apart you will need a torx t1 bit and a lot of patience. Have you any idea what the shipping of the whole 701 in piece would cost if you choose USPS, i mean not DHL or UPS but the normal postal parcel ?

Alternatively I am looking for friendly forum members with adress in the US who could let me use their adress for delivery and who could forward me the parcel via USPS to europe.

I know where I could order the needed part but the shippin is prohibitive or the company refuses to ship internationally.

The 701c weighs about 4lbs without the battery, so it would be too expensive to ship overseas as a parts unit. You'd be looking at $40 or so! I'll send you a PM if I get ahold of a T1 bit...
