I have the Thinkpad 240. I would think it is the same as the 240Z?

There are some differences:
- faster and newer CPU
- higher FSB (100 MHz vs. 66 MHz)
- in some models of the 240Z: ethernet
- in some models of the 240Z: XGA display (vs. the SVGA display of 240/240x)

All I can say is with X40's in the $200 range, you've got to seriously consider one as an alternative.

But the 240Z is much cuter! And its rarity makes it worth more than the X4* or even X3*. I bought my XGA 240Z for $200 in Dec 2008 and then upgraded to a 100GB 7200rpm HDD, so the final cost was $295, but it's well worth it. For an X40, I wouldn't be willing to pay any more than $180.
However, the OP doesn't seem to be a collector like us, so the X31 and X40 would probably make more sense.

X40 will run circles around the 240Z when it comes to performance. I had a 240X before and even with 256MB RAM and 5400rpm drive it was very slow and useless for anything but checking your email and some minor browsing. They have 2.5MB videocards that renders them next to useless for today's applications. Also, installing OS without a CDROM drive is a pain, although doable. But it is, indeed cute.
