FS: Very nice and speedy R51 Thinkpad

#1 Post by cj3209 » Sat Aug 15, 2009 9:33 pm

This is my friend's trusted Thinkpad for sale:

Product: ThinkPad R51 2883-2ZU
Operating system: Windows XP
Original description: P M 1.3GHz (Celeron), 256MB RAM, 30GB 4200rpm HDD, 15 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, Intel Extreme, 24x24x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD, Wireless upgradeable(MPCI), Modem(CDC), 10/100 Ethernet(LOM), UltraNav, Secure Chip, 6 cell Li-Ion battery, WinXP Pro

Upgraded:
- 512 MB of RAM
- Netgear WG511U Wireless PC Card INCLUDED (works great w/good range).

What I like about this notebook:
1) Clean-bright and nice 15" LCD screen with no noticeable defects;
2) Perfect for wireless notebook around the house; for the kids, etc.
3) Nice classic red and blue mouse buttons (I hate the new bland ones);
4) Solid XP Pro OS with zero problems;
5) Keyboard is solid with some shine;
5) Intact RR partition.

Just a really nice notebook for surfing and general use.

Looking for $250 SHIPPED to CONUS. PAYPAL accepted with NO FEES.

The battery gets around 1/5-2.0 hours. NO LENOVO WARRANTY left on this machine.

Email me: calebjoon-at-gmail-dot-com for pictures and any questions.

Thanks for looking.

hmmm....is there such a thing as a "P M Celeron" ?

I think it's either a Pentium-M or a "Mobile Celeron".

According to the lenovo lookup-page, it has a PM cpu...not a Celeron.

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... ry=28832ZU

(interestingly, while that Type Number produces a result on the Lookup webapge, that model# does not appear in the Ltwbook.pdf)

However, in the ltwbook, it shows that every R51 with a 1.3ghz cpu DOES have a Celeron cpu. I don't see any sign of a 1.3ghz Pentium-M shipping in any model.

And the parts-info page for that model (or for all R51 really)...

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-53115

...shows no Pentium-M slower than 1.4ghz.

So despite what the 'main' lenovo model-info page says, it does appear to have a Celeron cpu in it, not a "P M". :)

For what it's worth... :P

That's very interesting because the INTEL sticker (it was taken off) said 'Celeron' and the notebook indicates that it's a Celeron chip. Still speedy doing thinks like surfing and light computing such as office and PS work.

Thanks for clarification.

BTW: price lowered to $225 SHIPPED to CONUS.

Thanks!

That's a nice machine for basic tasks.

Also, for about $5, a 1.5GHz Pentium M CPU is a nice boost.

Underclocker: do you know which size chip to install? eBay lists SL6F9, SL7GL, SL7M8, and SL89U versions of the 1.5 Pentium M.

Thanks!

For sure, the SL6F9 is correct. I've pulled many from R5x and T4x machines. I have one that I can send you for $5 plus $1 shipping - just PM me. The swap is straight forward, but you'll need to use thermal grease on top of the CPU. IBM normally used so much on the original CPU that scraping off the small amount you really need from the old CPU/fan isn't an issue (however, most prefer Arctic Silver 5, if available).

Also, before you decide, look at the 1.6 and 1.7GHz Pentium M's. They usually aren't much more and pack even more of a punch. And finally, if you can find an internal mini-PCI IBM branded Intel BG adapter for around $10 or so, then consider that as an upgrade. A $15 to $20 investment like this would make that machine more attractive to a wider audience. Sorry, I don't have any other CPU's or wifi adapters on hand.
