WTB: Atheros a/b/g MiniPCI for my R40

#1 Post by emeraldgirl08 » Tue Oct 13, 2009 9:45 am

From what I've read I can use the Atheros based mpci's for my R40 w/o the "no1802" hack.

Research also leads me to believe that any Atheros card developed for the T40's/R50's should work w/o an 1802 error. If this is true I would like to purchase one from a fellow forum member.

I have a Broadcom in the R40 but it requires the hack. If I should pass this R40 to someone else I'm afraid they will toss a perfectly good laptop away if the error should ever arise while in their possession.

I'm hoping someone has one for under $10 shipped. It's a stretch but it doesn't hurt to ask :P

Why don't you apply the hack? Cost you nothing!
It's dead easy and needs to be done only once.
Only needs to be refreshed if you update the BIOS (unlikely on that 'oldie') or replace the CMOS battery.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

If you received a laptop and for some reason after a little maintenance you get this error.

Your laptop won't even boot into your OS!

What would you do?

I'd rather put a card in that doesn't need a knowledgeable hack. Not everyone is as informed as the people here on the forum. I just want to be a good girl and pass along a laptop that runs w/o hiccups or hitches is all.

I have an Atheros miniPCI card hanging out at home. I think it's a/b/g, but I'm not sure, but all signs point to it being primarily used in Thinkpads. I'll take a look at it when I get home and post the chipset/more info.

The miniPCI card is:
Atheros AR5BMB-44 a/b/g
FRU P/N: 39T0081

From a few quick searches, it seems to be referred to as the 'IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad 11 a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter II', and appears to be compatible with the R40.
