Does anyone know where I can find a CD-RW that is compatible with a Thinkpad 770E? I've been looking for WEEKS! Can someone help????

Get an outboard PC card based one. I've never found one that will mate to the 770E/X/Z CD/DVD drive tray hardware for the UltraBay II.

I'll admit that I haven't looked that hard for an internal solution, so there might be several available that I'm not aware of.

All of the upgrades I've seen on Ebay were targeted at the 600E.

They are all "thin" CDRW units. You must remove the adapter hardware from a 600 CD-ROM and mount it on this new drive. I would expect the new drive leaves a gap in the beveled part of the lower case because the "official" 600 CD's have that bevel as part of the door fascia.

IF you wanted to try to use one of these drives in a 770, you would need to have the original 770 CD. You would remove the CD drive from the box it is held within, try to fit the "slim" CD in it, and then try to figure out how to shim the drive so it fits properly in the box.

Having done all this, you may still have problems with the BIOS recoginzing this new drive for auto-boot. I've never tried this, so I don't know.

If somebody on Ebay claimed that this CDRW is good for Thinkpad 770 series, just remember that there are a lot of errors in Ebay descriptions. Caveat Emptor!!

I too have seen them on ebay..can't find em now....and if I remember right,the description stated they were made up units,and did have a little gap above the door,just couldn't fathom paying around the 169.00 CDN asking price....I picked up a Iomega Usb External 8x unit at a pawn shop for 30 bucks CDN

I have a never-used Yamaha model crw-F1 (check the specs and prices online) that uses a USB port. When I found an internal drive, I put the external one away, thinking I might use it with my T-pad on the road. Never did.

If this fits your bill, send an off-board msg to dwallace@att.net and let me know what you think it's worth. Then I'll find out about shipping from 02135 to wherever you sit.

Burning a CD from a USB1.1 port connection is crushingly slow vs. the IDE connection an internal burner would have. Far better to attempt to find an outboard burner with a 32BIT Cardbus enabled PC card connection.
