FS: Dell Server PowerEdge 840 with SBS2003 R2 5CAL $400

*** Price Drop, $400 shipped***

For sale is a Dell PowerEdge 840 server from my law office. It currently has 4GB of RAM and came with a fully licensed copy of Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 Standard R2, which is a long way of saying you get SharePoint, Exchange and all of the other goodies of SBS.

The server has a single processor slot that came with (and still has) an Intel Pentium D dual core 64 bit server processor at 2.8 GHz, and can accept up to a Xeon 3050. It currently has 4.0 GB of RAM, and will address up to 8.0 GB with a 64 Bit OS (SBS 2003 is 32 Bit).

The server has a built-in Broadcom 10/100/1000 NIC and a Dell SAS5iR hardware RAID controller, currently configured as RAID level 1 (mirrored) with dual 160 GB Seagate hard drives (original). There is also a DVDRW drive installed. The server has a slot for a tape or floppy drive and for two additional hard drives (SATA).

The server has been flawless for the nearly 3 years I've owned it, and I am the original owner. My office is a non-smoking office, and the server has always been connected to a UPS unit, so it has never abruptly lost power.

The reason for owning one of these things if you don't run a business is for the Microsoft Exchange Server, which is MUCH more powerful than any of the online calendar or email systems out there. You also get full Active Directory, making it easy to control all of the PCs in your family or business, including WSUS (Windows Server Update Service) that takes over for Windows Update and lets you control what gets installed on which PC, when.

This would be great for any multiple PC home or a business with up to 5 employees. Additional licenses are required for additional employees, but the number of computers is unlimited. For example, my office has 4 employees, but two of them have a desktop and a laptop, and I have a desktop and two laptops. Thats 8 computers, but we stil lhad one unsed license.

I am asking $400 shipped. The OS alone (includes all original install media and COA on the server case) is worth more than that, and remember shipping on this thing (about 60lbs) is going to cost at least $50. In effect, you are paying for the OS and getting the server (and its shipping) for free.

Lower 48 states CONUS only.
