The most thinkpad I can get for $450

#1 Post by CanadianDude » Sun Jan 03, 2010 1:59 am

Shipped to Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

$450 US. I will not be using Paypal, so you will not have to deal with fees.

My only requirement is that it must have at least a high(er) end PM or low end dual core processor.

Preferably looking for : T60, X60, R60, possibly a T43.

If you have something along these lines for less than $450 by all means post it.

You can definitely get a T60/R60/X60/Z61 for $450. May not be the most high-end one, but probably not low-end either.

If you are lucky, you might even sport a T61/R61/X61 for this much, although the 61 series has both advantages and disadvantages over the 60 series.

I replied to the OP regarding the $300 R60 and $400 T60 that I have available.

Outside the forum, regarding the best machine for $450, I think you can find T60p's on eBay (either 14", 15" or 15.4"), if you're patient. However, you have to be careful with reading/interpreting the description and try to find one with a warranty.

I'd say:

* 15" high quality IPS (Flexview) screens not available
* Slightly lower battery life
* Bad battery design on the 14" widescreen (6-cell sticks out, 9-cell sticks out as far as Alaska)
* No stereo mix recording option (yes, some people are seriously bothered by it)
* Models with discrete video cards (nVidia) belong to the faulty nVidia 8M series, which makes them, in theory, ticking timebombs
* USB port placement on 14" widescreen model not ideal (all vertical)
* Keyboard quality is not as good subjectively (although the keyboard itself is the same - I feel it is caused by the chassis support)
* Look totally repulsive

To the average person, these disadvantages won't matter much. And surely the advantages of a 61 series, such as the availability of faster CPUs, support of 8GB of RAM (compared with only 3GB for T60), Firewire, optional card reader, etc. will usually far outweigh these disadvantages. But the price is higher accordingly.

I don't need a powerful unit. I need something that will:

-internet well (yes, I use it as a verb)
-word documents
-powerpoint presentations (Main use, as I need to sell myself to make a living)

I have a Macbook Pro I use for personal stuff, but I find that I need a decent windows machine for business.

Underclocker's R60 with the T2500 Core Duo should do the trick, and for a good price as well.

If you're patient and keep your eyes open you can definitely get a very nice machine for $450 US. I just got what (at least to my uneducated eye) is basically a brand-new T60 2007-GAU with SXGA+ screen off ebay for $465 Canadian after crummy paypal currency exchange rates, shipping and import duties are included. I even found the unit has warranty till June of this year!
