SOLD......Ultrabay2000 Multi-Burner DVDRW Price lowered

#1 Post by MadeInJapan » Sat Feb 26, 2005 12:01 pm

For sale here is one of the original DVDRW Multi-burners for the "T" series Thinkpads. It will however work with any Thinkpad that uses the 12.7mm standard with the correct plastic bezel/bracket. This drive burns DVD-R and DVD-RAM with no problem what-so-ever as well as CD's and will read all formats of discs (- and +). Model number is UJ-811B, selling on eBay for almost $300, which is really unbelievable. Comes with plastic bezel/bracket to make it fit the ultrabay2000 slot, if needed. In excellent, almost new condition. $125 or best offer. If you want to buy without the plastic bezel/bracket, price is $115 or best offer. This is a drive that I personally used in my own T30 Thinkpad and so is not a re-sale of something I bought off of eBay or from IBM. Sure, there are newer, faster drives out there, but expect to pay a premium. This drive is perfect for someone who wants to back-up their system with DVD-RAM discs or likes to do occassional DVD burning, or constant CD burning. Will include IBM mutiburner software CD as a bonus as well as the Panasonic DVD-RAM software if desired. See the one on eBAy here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... eName=WD1V

Know what you mean...that's why I used the word "incredible," when I mentioned the eBay item....way over priced...my price is half of that...but of course, I'll take best offer....could go much lower than what I said in this thread. Will include the bracket and software with the drive. What do you think is a fair price?

Actually, thanks for posting the location of the UJ-845B. I'd been looking for that particular drive I have the UJ-815B which is also a slot loader, and am well pleased with it as I was able to make it region free. Wish the other slot loaders- the 825, 835 and 845 could also be made region free, but I cna't find any firmware upgrades for them. Unfortunately, the 811 can't be made region free either.

So, when considering buying my UJ-811B, please take all of the above into consideration. Of course, I would like to get as much as possible for this drive, but I would like to be fair too and am willing to lower the price to what others think is fair. Even at 2x, it is still a very nice burner.

guys,

I'm planning to buy the UJ845-B slim drive to use for my 2378-FVU. I read somewhere on this forum that besides the bezel, the connectors don't line up right? Is this true? Any adapters needed?

thanks,
Vu

Sorry, but the 845 is a slot drive that is 12.7mm tall. It will not fit your T42, if that's what you have. Your Thinkpad requires a 9.5mm tall drive. There are only 2 known such multiburners in the world that we know of and that's the UJ-812 and UJ-822. Do a search her on this forum and you'll find information about both. Good luck.

What's the adapter thingie mentioned with the 845, and which one would I need for an A20p? I have the original DVD drive that came with the A20p (won't read DVD-R or +R) and I assume I can transplant the bezel. Thanks.

Dont' know anything about the "A" series Thinkpads. Does it have the Ultrabay2000? Does the right side taper inward in the bay? If so, and the drive height is 12.7mm, then it's an Ultrabay2000 laptop. If you'rs does not taper in, and the bay is still 12.7 mm tall then you don't have to worry about doing a modification of cutting the faceplate on the drive...should just slide in.

The bezel or adapter spoken of is the small pieces of plastic that you have to take off of your original CD or DVD drive that was in your bay. These piece of plastic help the drive line up with the connectors at the end of the bay. It's nothing special, and easy to deal with but necessary.

All "bare drives" (the way the DVD burner arrives at your door, unless bought from IBM or on eBay and specifically states that the bezel is included) come without the plastic pieces, but the fitment on the bare drives are universal, so the plastic pieces are assured a correct fit.

I've never seen a "bare drive" not fit correctly after the plastic pieces/bezel is screwed onto it. Therefore, you are correct that you can just transplant the bezel from your drive to the 845 as long as your drive is the same height (there are only 2 choices...the 9.5mm that fit the T4* series and the 12.7mm that fit most, if not all other laptops).

Hope I was able to answer your questions.

The NEC drive arrived and I was able to transplant the rear and side bezel thingies from my old Ultrabay2000 dvd-rom drive without too much fuss. I was not able to figure out how to transplant the front bezel part, which on the old drive conformed to the curve of the edge of the A20p. That's ok, the NEC drive still fit in the slot. The square face doesn't match up perfectly with the edge of the laptop, but it's no big deal since the laptop is basically shot to hell anyway. This is sort of an end-of-life upgrade for it.

I tried inserting a DVD-R disc that the old DVD-ROM drive was unable to read. The NEC read the DVD-R disc just fine. I haven't yet tried writing a DVD and I'm not sure if I have DVD-burning software installed (I'm running a stock Red Hat 9 distro).

Now that I can read DVD-R, I may finally upgrade this machine to Fedora Core 3, which I have on a bootable DVD-R (this is in fact the DVD-R that I tested). The FC3 disc is also able to boot from the new DVD drive, which makes installing very convenient.

So, my upgrade plan is to buy a new hard disc ($75 or so for a 40GB disc from zipzoomfly--that's enough space for me), swap it into the A20p, and do a clean FC3 install on it. Then I can put the old drive in an external USB2 enclosure and mount it on my X40 since the A20p has only a USB1 port. I can transfer files from the old disc via the X40 to the A20p over 100 mbit ethernet.

Thanks for pointing to where to get that drive!

Also, go to www.cdfreaks.com and then into their forum section...go down to hardware/NEC and do a search for this drive. You'll be amazed at what people are doing with it after a few tweaks and firmware upgrades. I have done the latest 2.4FW upgrade and loving having the speed limiter off and region free...as well as burning + discs as DVD-ROM (bit setting or book typing). Nice cheap drive because of its hackability! BTW, it will burn +R discs much better than -R. If you have older DVD stand-alones that don't play +R very well, then burn in DVD-ROM...this plays in ANYTHING!
