WTB/WTT T4x with Ati 9000 and SXGA+

#1 Post by stgreek » Wed Mar 02, 2005 5:56 am

Hello everyone. I am looking for a Thinkpad with an Ati 9000 (NOT the 9600!) and SXGA+ screen. The only laptops which I think had this combo were the T40p and some T41s. As I already have a fully loaded 1.5 Ghz T40, I am not interested at all in accessories, I only want an open bay machine. Also, if someone is not too fond of their SXGA+ display I would love to trade the bare machines (with some premium of course). My machine is in flawless condition and with a couple of years remaining on-site warranty. If anyone has one or can tell me where I can find a cheap one (Does Bill sell older machines? I dont think so) I'd be grateful.

I am located in the Netherlands, but would be willing to travel in Europe for a trade. If one wants to sell theirs from the US (trade is obviously quite hard) I have excellent Ebay feedback under the name Thinkpad_trading.

Regards
Stavros

PS If you are wondering why I don't want the superior 9600, it has to do with Ati's horrible drivers for Linux which I use.

Could you mention which problems those are with ATI Linux drivers?

I have been using the newest ones without any problems. They seem to work really nicely for me.

Then consider yourself lucky. It is basically a 50-50 chance that they will work. Especially with source-based distros (like gentoo or slackware) the chance that they work goes down to 30%, since these distros dont like binaries that much. I would rather take the not-so-fast 9000 that has 3d acceleration from the kernel drivers than the ati drivers. Besides, there are no other major disadvantages in these machines, since I will be using my state of the art stuff with them ( 7k60, 1 gig ram, dvd-r, ibm firewire etc).

Ati binary drivers is basically the #1 rant you will find in ANY linux gaming community. Nvidia has done a much better job, and this reflects on their (linux) sales.
