I just acquired a used 15" R51e for a dirt price. Unfortunately the reason it was dirt cheap is because it has a cracked screen everything else is pristine. Since then I've been pouring over the forum for the past couple of days trying to get screen info and I think I may have confused myself in all the reading I've done.
I think I really only have two questions.
1) What are the other model LCDs that I can look for that will be compatible with the 15" R51e. I think I read the t43 and a couple of others.
2) What's the best place to pick up a used LCD for this model thinkpad?
Finally, since I've never done this before I'm thinking the easiest solution for me might be to purchase a complete working screen assembly. That way, I could just take the old broken one off and install the new one.
Also any advise as I begin this trek?
Thanks.

What's the resolution of the current LCD? If you don't know, please post the machine type/model number from the sticker on the bottom of the machine. It will be a (7) digit alpha-numeric like 2347-3CU.

Thanks for your answer Harry, unfortunately I was just war gaming this out before the computer arrived. I just wanted to know my next step. As soon as it arrives I'll come back with those numbers.
Thanks again.

Welcome to the forum.
I'd guess that the LCD is XGA. I'm not sure the R51e was offered (or will work) with any other LCD resolution.
You can certainly use the 15" XGA LCD from any T42/T43/R50/R51/R52. You can also use one from any R60/T60.
You can just swap the entire assembly, but I'm not sure it's any easier or quicker than swapping the panel. With the assembly, you have to remove the keyboard, palmrest, wifi connections (assuming you have wifi), LCD cable connection and hinge screws. With the LCD you have several screw covers and screws, the inverter connection and the LCD cable connection. The hardest part is dislodging the ThinkLight from the cover and then reseating it. It's not that hard, but it's the hardest part. You have to do this to get access to the LCD cable connector on the back of the LCD.
I'd say that if the cover, bezel and hinges are in good shape, then just replace the LCD. If they are worn, look for the whole assembly. The effort really is about the same, but you'll have more selection if you just want the panel. I think I even have one from an R60 available!
You can post a looking for ad in the marketplace on the forum or peruse eBay for one.
