For those not in the know, the X40 takes PC2700. So are you looking for a single 1GB stick of PC2700, or will 2X512MB sticks suffice?.

X40's either have 256MB or 512MB soldered to the motherboard, depending on the X40 model. So adding a 1GB sodimm will bring you to either 1.25GB or 1.5GB and adding 512MB will bring you to 768MB or 1GB.

the existing setup has 512MB on it. We have never added RAM, so are you saying there are two open slots? I don't care how I get to 1 GB additional, so I would take 2 x 512 or 1 x 1GB

Just one available slot, I forgot about the soldered in memory. So you want a single stick of 1GB PC2700.

Best case for me is that I can find an inexpensive 1 GB stick. This is purely for a knock around box and don't want to spend the $40+ this appears to cost via ebay. Would love to spend less than $20.

XP runs very well on 768MB of RAM, so consider a 512MB stick if your budget is limited. You may get lucky if a member offers a 1GB PC2700 stick for @ $20. That would be a very nice price, although unlikely.
