Sorry, none that I'm not using. I do have two CDRW/DVD slim drives from T4x machines (curved bezel). If interested, PM me.

#7 Post by BillMorrow » Wed Dec 08, 2010 4:04 am

on one of my T60's the fan just started to whine..
so if yours will fit this 14 inch T60, i'll take your fan.. :)

also, there is a really strange problem with, uhmmm.. not sure..
my guess is there is a charging board or some such (no, i have not looked at the HMM yet, color me lazy or busy or whatever) that is flaky..

symptoms are:
T60 runs and then goes to sleep or hibernate..
when trying to turn it back on it by pressing either esc (in the case of it in suspend) or the power button (in the case of it being in hibernate) and the power and batt LED's go out and its dead..
i have to take out the battery and disconnect the AC adapter and then replace the battery before it will boot up..

SO, if you have anything in addition to the fan that might be responsible for this unusual behaviour please let me know.. :)

Bill, I noticed you have three T60's listed in your signature. This fan is from an Intel GPU T60 and wouldn't be appropriate for an ATI GPU T60, since it doesn't have the extra metal that would cover the ATI GPU. So, if your whining T60 has an Intel GPU, just PM me your shipping addresss.

Regarding your flaky T60, unless it's a battery issue (and many T60 batteries go bad), it sounds like a motherboard that might be on it's way out. Again, I'm not sure which style mobo you have, there are seven varieties for 14" or 15" 4:3 models (Intel GPU, Intel GPU w/WWAN slot, ATI X1300, ATI X1300 w/WWAN slot, ATI X1400, ATI V5200, ATI V5250), but I also have an ATI X1300 w/WWAN slot mobo for sale in the marketplace --> http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=92478

If you're up for a mobo swap, PM me! I find a T60 mobo swap easier than a T4x mobo swap, but it's still time consuming.

clocker..
the M/T is 2008-CTO, PC tools says it is a 2008-VRQ with a T7200 cpu i swapped for the T2400..
graphics is ATI Radeon X1400..

the problem is not the battery as i swapped it out and the problem remains with the T60..

i just booted it up cold..
lights=AC and Batt
tried with battery and AC adapter.. no go, AC and Batt lights went out..
tried with just the battery.. no go..
tried with just the AC adapter.. no go, AC light went out..
tried again with just the battery.. it started to boot.. as it booted i plugged in AC adapter..
all is working until the next shutdown..

BTW, fan is quiet now but it will probably start making noise again if i leave this one running.
and now fan is becoming noisy..

its a strange problem..
(except for the fan, thats a simple thing)

i'm going to get the HMM and take a look at it.. :)

more later..
and sources for a fan will be appreciated..

Bill, here's an EBay search for a fan for your machine with the discrete GPU -

Harry provided good options for the fan, of course, a Looking For ad in your marketplace might work too!

Each time I've seen mobo's behave in a similar way, it was due to a liquid spill - which wasn't obvious until I removed the mobo. Although I suppose that board level components could be failing, too.

Given the time, I would open up the machine, clean any dusty components, remove the base and look for corrosion or other signs of liquid damage. Unless you purchased it new, it's possible that an older spill is finally taking its toll.

The mobo with ATI X1300 I have available would work fine as a replacement, but the video performance for demanding graphics apps would be slightly lower. Heat output and fan use should be slightly lower, too.

@BillMorrow

You said that you swapped a CPU awhile back, what if you put back the old CPU, does it still exhibit the same kind of behaviour.

I'm not sure if the preference is still for the Atheros models (it was with the T4x machines), but I've used both extensively in various T60's and both work just fine. (I just sold the one Atheros one that I had listed.)

Hello - New to the forum - not so "new" to Thinkpads. My fav - the 701c.

Now using a reasonably loaded T60p - 15" flexview and love it - but need a new palmrest (w/fr).

Don't know how to get in on this deal. But if the palmrest (29R9411) is still available - PM (?) and we'll work it out.

thanks
