Want to buy the "tallest" Thinkpad display I can get. Presumably this is a Thinkpad T60//T60p/T61/T61p with a UXGA 4:3 1600x1200 Flexview display. Any out there available?

(More background on my requirements/search, fwiw: http://forum.notebookreview.com/what-no ... earch.html)

You're actually looking for a T60p.

No T61/p units were available with IPS/AFFS/FlexView screens, while the IPS screens offered on standard T60 were SXGA+ (1400x1050) only.

This does not include various FrankenPads that people have built and modded.

Happy hunting.

hydrostarr, I recall from another thread that you need a bright screen that can be used under direct sunlight. So you should avoid Flexview displays, which tend to be quite dim. Brand new ones do have decent brightness, but they get dim over time quite rapidly (versus other panel technologies).

Oh man...and I thought I had this licked... :( Many, many thanks pianowizard for the heads up. I had presumed that the several posts/blogs/reviews saying to the effect "this is the best display I have every seen" was going to take care of this issue. Alas, another rock to kick over. But important to know, and thanks again.

Ah, very good, saves me LOADS of time optimizing my web searches. Thanks ajkula66!

This deal seems good enough that I'm planning to buy a T60p now (and if the sunlight-display and battery stuff doesn't work out, I'll buy a T400 as well). Any comments on the quality of this T60p below? Many thx in advance...

Details:

A seller has offered me $320 for this 1600x1200 15" T60p UXGA:
http://houston.craigslist.org/sys/1859457508.html
(out of warranty, at this price, of course)

Any problems that anyone can see with this machine? Seller seems trustworthy (talked over the phone), and said they rarely used the machine, purchased in Sept 2008. I plan to be sending the money via WesternUnion by 10:30a Chicago/central-time tomorrow (Saturday), so any timely responses would be much appreciated. :)

The machine and price look OK, but it's hard to tell from the bad pictures. Isn't sending Western Union cash a bit risky? There is a warning in every craigslist Ad - " Avoid scams and fraud by dealing locally! Beware any deal involving Western Union, Moneygram, wire transfer, cashier check, money order, shipping, escrow, or any promise of transaction protection/certification/guarantee. More info"

Hmmm, that's a good point (on the WesternUnion-Craigslist stuff). Seller claims to not be a paypal-er; would paypal offer any sort of "protection" in this case?

The problem is that we aren't dealing locally; I'm in Chicago, and he's in Houston. I've had several phone interactions with the seller...fwiw. Not a "polished" seller, which leads me to be less concerned about them duping me...but maybe that's the ploy...

Thoughts?

Personally I wouldn't take the risk, but I'll let others with Craigslist experiences jump in here. I am not a frequent buyer there. Paypal does offer the buyer some protections, but there are rules there too.

The seller has SMS-texted me (among other things) their full name and address. Not sure if that's any better...but thought it worth noting.

I'm probably going to call them to be straightforward with my concerns.

Any other tips very welcome...

When it sounds to good to be true, it usually is...

Get one in the Marketplace here (no, I have none to offer... :) ) and sleep soundly ever after.

My $0.02 only...

Good luck.

Yeah, makes sense.

Further.... this is looking more suspicious.... there's multiple Houston Craigslist postings that have expired (but still show up as "hits" in http://www.searchallcraigs.com ) that seem to have similar sort of T60p posts ("I'm replacing my wife's laptop..."). I'm questioning this deal...

Thanks for the heads up, may have saved me $320....

I'm in Detroit, I have at least one each. T42p, T43p and T60p that matches your requirements as far as UXGA Flexview's are concerned. My T60p's would be more than $320.00 but the T4x's would be about what you almost lost.
I have a nice T60 with a 15inch XGA TFT too if you wanted to get into a T60 machine cheap and add your own 'new' screen later.
I have about a dozen Toughbooks with sunlight visible displays too but they are 10.4inch CF-18's

I'm interested in all of the above. Can you PM me with pricing? Can you also send me model/type and serial-number info for the T60 XGA and any T60p still under warranty?

Thanks!

Well, well, well. That is the exact seller that sold me the T60p UXGA on eBay described as "Great condition; no dead pixels, blah blah." It has a stuck pixel and a hair in the LCD, among other things. :x

BTW, his eBay listings are not set up to use PayPal, so he agreed to take a Western Union money order. He shipped the same day it arrived, so he is at least trustworthy in that regard.

goofyGAguy- how can you tell it's the same buyer? phone number, something else? And what's his ebay handle? Does he have any current postings?

Very interesting. So I'd really like to buy this unit for $320 even if it is faulty in ways not advertised if I can trust this seller is going to ship it and not rip me off. And I need to do this at least by 10:30a CT today...probably by 8:30a (which is in like an hour, ugh) to meet scheduling for meetings I have and another visit the seller claims he has. (8:30a is an hour from now...hmmm...) More comments from the community here?

fwiw, there's hits all over searchallofcraigs.com for this sellers phone number. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing. At the very least, this seller seems to be fibbing about the fact that "their husband bought them a new laptop" or "their wife doesn't use this laptop" in multiple craigslist posts--unless he has a lot of wives. ;)

Simple. Here is the listing for the unit I bought. Just compare that to your Craigslist ad. It's pretty obvious it's the same guy:

Thanks goofyGAguy! Your help was essential to my getting this stuff figured out.

And the search/saga has finally come to an end. I did end up buying from the above seller. More details:

Yes, thank you. :)

Also: I may be still in the market to buy another 15" T60p UXGA/1600x1200, so proposals/offers still welcome. I suspect I may want to "collect" these, as they seem to be the last of the 4:3's that world will ever see...
