But are they not backward compatible? Or am I way off base?

Sorry, "way off base" :). The X24 uses SDRAM PC133 modules, same as what the T23 uses. If yours are PC2-5300, then they are DDR2 modules which, 1) physically won't fit inside the X24 socket and 2) even if they could, the electrical interface is quite different.
