GONE! hi-end R40, barebone, very pretty, very dead,

#1 Post by ajkula66 » Sat Aug 21, 2010 2:30 am

And this was supposed to be an easy fix......oh well...

the basics:

ThinkPad R40 2896-Q4U

Original description:
P4-M 2.4GHz......................please read below
256MB RAM
60GB 4200rpm HDD.................NONE, no caddy/cover either
15 SXGA+(1400x1050) TFT LCD
32MB ATI Radeon 7500
24x10x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD...............NONE
802.11a/b wireless
Modem
10/100 Ether
UltraNav
Sec Chip
IEEE 1394
8 cell Li-Ion Batt......................NONE
WinXP Pro................COA intact

A friend of mine got this at a garage sale and brought it to me since he wasn't able to power it on. I opened it up and found the fan and CPU missing. Expecting an easy fix, I threw in a P4M CPU and tried to fire it up with no fan, to see if it would boot at least for a few seconds. No. The battery light blinks, and that's it. Dead as dodo.

Therefore, please expect a dead/useless motherboard with no CPU or fan.

What is nice about this machine is its physical condition, which is VERY clean overall, a good 9 out of 10. The keyboard works, the palmrest is clean, the bottom is almost spotless and the lid is in very good shape. The screen shows no signs of abuse or physical damage, although I have no clue whether it works or not since I haven't tested it and have absolutely no intention of ripping this ThinkPad apart to do so.

If you own a cosmetically challenged 15" R40, or simply have nothing better to do with your time, you might find this project to be a very interesting one.

Asking $38 shipped within U.S. (flat rate priority box with DC) or $25 + shipping at cost almost anywhere else. Will consider trades for a PATA laptop hard drive or DDR2 laptop RAM

PM or email me directly to tataslonATaol.com with any questions/concerns.
