FS: Lenovo X61s, 4GB Hyperx RAM, Dock+DVD RW, Warranty 2012

#1 Post by DestinationUnknown » Mon Aug 09, 2010 10:18 am

Up for sale again. I cant honestly make up my mind.... I buy thinkpads with 3 year warranty and then upgrade them. However, for viewing lab slides next semester, I feel it will be comfortable for me to have a bit bigger screen.

I just went on ebay and found most x61s older or without warranty. Id like to have $590/OBO shipped in original boxes for the laptop and docking station for this machine. There is a crack on front right palm rest which does not effect functionality but depending on upon the offer we can negotiate or I can replace the palm rest.

About the machine... 4GB Kingston HyperX RAM, stock 160GB hard drive. 8 cell battery (giving around 3 hours with max brightness and stuff). I will consider throwing in an Asus Notebook Cooling Pad ($39.99 from staples) and a targus laptop carry case ($99.99 from sears but this has been collecting dust in the closet. I believe Targus gives lifetime warranty so they may replace it, with school schedule I have not had time to call).

If I can get a decent offer Ill upgrade to a bigger screen, if not, I will be very happy to stay with X61s ESPECIALLY after the Upgraded Bios to enable SATA II , this machine has been running circles with my SSD :)

Looks like a nice machine you've got. :)

A couple of general notes:

* A crack on the palmrest may actually be covered under warranty, unless it is something big and/or obviously caused by user abuse. Generally it is sufficient to open a ticket with Lenovo under "palmrest won't latch / doesn't sit properly" for them to send you a new one. Sometimes they don't even ask for the old one back...

* I totally understand and completely agree with the notion of upgrading warranties to the max possible (tried to do this to my own Thinkpad just recently, but failed due to unforeseen technical issues  ), I'd say it's probably better to wait until close to the end of the warranty term before upgrading, since it's always possible as long as the machine in warranty. A few things can happen that will make an early warranty upgrade useless and thus a waste of money (machine may be lost/stolen/broken in way not covered, or you may just lose interest in it). And while true that the extra warranty is a huge bonus when buying a second hand machine, and will allow one to command a higher price, the difference is not likely to offset the full cost of the extension.

Good luck with the sale! :D

Thanks for the helpful post. The crack is noticable now, and honestly I think it started when the service center replaced keyboard, they over tightened the screw on that corner. I didnt even notice it, but putting it on the dock and off, it made it more visible.... But Ill take your advice on opening up a service ticket.

My total was around $1600, as per the order on the original packing (included with the sale) directly from lenovo and then I bought the dvd drive extra. I think I overpaid at that time because X200 was already out... But I liked the layout of x61s a tad better. With the bios upgrade and SSD, I am very satisfied with the machine, but next semester when I start pathology, the slides for the lab will get a bit tighter to look at on 12.1".

I recently went through a fun little argument with IBM UK about this. When I returned to the US, I applied what I learned from IBM UK to do the following: I looked up the part number in my build config., called IBM (*not* Lenovo), provided my serial number and model, and requested that specific part. I didn't explain why, or what was wrong with the old one -- I simply spoke to a (very professional) IBMer who placed the order for the part. Shortly thereafter it arrived in a nice box. I swapped in the new part, sent off the old part (I believe it goes directly to recycling), and was on my way.

The palmrest on the X6x is a CRU, so there's no reason to send it in to EasyServ (especially considering that they'll likely try to claim it's your fault and refuse to cover it.)

Do you happen to know if the CRU for Palm Rest on X61s comes without additional fan ? I read somewhere something about an additional fan to reduce heat on the palm rest....

No, the palmrest assembly is a separate part.

You can get the fan on eBay for like $30 though, so I'd just go that route if you wanted to add it.

Oh, it's also worth noting that the X60-series palmrests lack the additional heat-shielding that was added to the X61-series ones, so if you happened to get a "grab bag" unit with the X60 palmrest it might be worth seeing if you can talk yourself into getting one of the X61 FRUs.

Underclocker investigated this matter and some later X60 series palmrests do have the shielding, apparently.
