LF: IBM 701C(S), other older Thinkpads maybe?
LF: IBM 701C(S), other older Thinkpads maybe?
So I've been wanting one of these babies for a while and am finally deciding to do something about it. After a bit of digging it seems there's a few threads that went unresolved in regards to one of these being sold. Let me know what you've got and an asking price. Not sure what kind of condition I'm looking for, but if it's cheap enough I'll probably pick up anything.
I figured maybe if anyone has any older Thinkpads they want to get rid of for around the cost of shipping I might be interested as well. I'm mostly interested in a 701C(S) though.

Re: LF: IBM 701C(S), other older Thinkpads maybe?
i have many 701C thinkpads in varying states..
and, i think, even one 701Cs that works..
though why anyone would want a Cs display i can not understand..
obviously, none of the batteries are any good.. main and cmos..
also, FWIW, i have several new system boards and also, some new keyboards..
and talking about old thinkpads, i have some really interesting very old models..
such as a 755CD but not the regular CD the one with the removeable top back so as to use it with an overhead projector..
and a thinkpad 860 with the camers, for which i was once offered a factory WHITE thinkpad 750..
and of course TWO thinkpad S30's..
one with the piano black finish and a special one off sample (probably made for the IBM CEO of the time) with the soft velvet black paint..
and as the piece-de-restiance and getting back to the 701's i have a modified system board with a 133mhz cpu AND a 64meg memory part, taking the 701 to a 72meg, 133 mhz computer.. (pretty good for that thinkpad at that time)..
and theres other stuff in boxes..

As you can imagine I'm very interested in a good bit of that stuff. I'm not sure exactly how the rules dictate how this kind of thread operates, but do you have any sort of asking price for any of your wares? Even just a general ballpark figure would be nice.
Thanks,
Frank
Secondary thought: Honestly I have no idea how the 701Cs screen operates, but from the sound of things, it operates rather poorly. I'm just fascinated by the "butterfly" keyboard all together and love how it operates. I figured I might as well try and get my hands on one before they're even more of a collectors item.
Thanks,
Frank

Re: LF: IBM 701C(S), other older Thinkpads maybe?
well, since i'm the guy who pays for this place i can do pretty much what i want..
but i don't step over the line.. usually..
uhmmm..
all that stuff is either on display in a show case (or two) or in boxes downstairs in the lower part of the house..
LOTS of 701C's..
i'm sure some actually work..
i have a near perfect one and some less-than-perfect..
i getting too old to want to mess with these anymore..
so the best thing is to make a reasonable offer for what you would like..
the S30's are $600 each, BTW..
i have a 570 and base, and various 750, 755, 760 models..
i think that 755CD is a 755XD..
hot stuff 10/12/14 years ago..

Well I'm hoping that you weren't hoping I'd be picking up a S30 or two
As for an offer I really have *no* idea what any of this stuff is worth. I think ideally I'd like to Paypal you some funds and get a box full of stuff I might be able to make use out of, including a 701C or three... Odds are I'm not looking (to dish out the cash) for display case stuff... yet.
Sorry to be so difficult about this whole offer thing, I just don't want to end up insulting you with a horrible offer.

Alright Bill, sounds good.
I think I'd rather have some of the less-stellar condition ones due to my frugality

Re: LF: IBM 701C(S), other older Thinkpads maybe?
ok, heres the deal..
i'll see what i have, pack them up and send them out..
you need to specify with or without HDD's and any add in memory..
how many come with all the little doors that are prone to being broken..
how many i check to see if they boot to the bios..
i think shipping 4 will be a good start..
i ship, you pay shipping..
you evaluate what you got and make an offer..
i don't like the offer, you return the whole bunch..
fair..?

Re: LF: IBM 701C(S), other older Thinkpads maybe?
I'd be nice if they came with hard drives, memory, plastics, and booted to BIOS. Honestly that sounds good if I can get an idea of what you'd be looking to get for them before you ship them out. I'd hate to get them, not be able to reach a price we can both agree on, ship them back, and be down $40+ for shipping.

Feel free to let me know about any of that whenever you get a chance. I'm not in a rush, just wouldn't mind getting at least a 701C eventually
