I bought this one with the intention of turning it into my "daily beater" - T30s generally handle abuse pretty well - got a faster CPU for it, all ready to throw an updated wireless card in, but when I finally received a replacement keyboard and started testing the machine properly, I realized that it had more issues than I've got time to deal with...
the short bottom line: this is a functional - for the most part - machine in its current condition. In the long run, it will need a new motherboard.
the issues:
- One of the RAM slots is iffy. It hasn't failed completely yet, but only reads certain DIMMS, and there's no consistency in which ones will be read or not.
- I can't get the wired LAN or USB ports to work, neither in XP nor in Linux. Here's the really weird part: BIOS shows a MAC address, drivers install with no problems (meaning that the OS is "seeing" the hardware) but the aforementioned ports remain non-functional. The board has been swapped at some point (the machine shows 2366-85U in BIOS) and someone might have messed something up, but I can't figure out what, since the ports show no physical damage. My days of board level repair are long since gone so you do the detective work. To make matters more confusing, both the wireless and Bluetooth function with no issues.
the brighter side of life:
- The LCD is almost perfect - and most people would find it perfect indeed - but I'm a very difficult guy to please when it comes to screens and will tell you that it has two ever so slight light pressure marks, each of them being a pen-tip size. With that said, this is by far the brightest and nicest LCD I've seen on a T30 in a very long time.
- The rest of the machine is still quite presentable, with normal wear for its age. Some keyboard/palmrest shine, and wear on the lid, but still a nice unit nevertheless.
I'd like to see $75 + actual shipping cost for machine as described. If I can't get that I'll just go on the hunt for a new planar and back to my original plan. Might be interested in trades for 1GB DDR/DDR2 laptop RAM sticks, PATA laptop hard drives, maybe somethine else...try me...
