Needed - Windows XP SP1 or 1a OEM Install disc only
Needed - Windows XP SP1 or 1a OEM Install disc only
Am looking to buy an OEM Windows XP Home install disc - I don't need a key code - just the physical disc itself to use to restore the OS on an older computer for a friend. Either SP1 or Sp1a should do the trick. Using an SP2 or later disc results in the keycode from the COA not being recognized. PM or email me if you have one that you can spare.
Thanks,
Alice
Thanks,

Alice, FWIW, I purchased an OEM install CD for XP Pro a few years ago from a local system building. Cost all of $10. Only works with valid COA and all quite legal. You might try that route if necessary.

If you know the key that goes with the SP2 disc, use that to install XP, which has a 30 day trial. XP's activation program allows you to change the key. At this point you can change the key to the COA key on the machine and activate it over the internet. I've done this a number of times and it's always worked.

SP3 should work just fine. That way you don't have to enter a key at setup and you can add it later. SP2C is the one that keeps you from installing with the old keys. PM me and I'll help you out with it.
Re: Needed - Windows XP SP1 or 1a OEM Install disc only
I'll give that a try - Have had the same problem with XP Pro in the past - on older Thinkpads - and an SP1a OEM system builder's disc works nicely for restoring them - since I have both service pack 2 and 3 upgrade discs installing SP1 or 1a is not a problem - I was hoping to snag an old XP Home disc as an easy way of getting a retired friend's computer back up and running. His needs are pretty basic and XP is more than enough for his use.FredGarvin wrote:If you know the key that goes with the SP2 disc, use that to install XP, which has a 30 day trial.
