You guessed it, this this T40 has the garbled screen issue that many of the ThinkPads in that line suffer from. I've inspected and it the solution in this case is definitely the need for re-flow. I was going to either re-flow it myself or replace the board but I've decided instead to sell it and use these funds to upgrade my T60. Everything else about this machine is flawless. It's very clean, runs fast and quiet on XP and Ubuntu 10.10. I played some 720p videos at 2.5mbps and didn't experience any issues.
1.5 Ghz
1 GB RAM
30 GB HDD
CD-RW/DVD Ultrabay Slim Drive
2nd HDD Ultrabay Slim adapter
Charger
Battery (doesn't hold for more than 30min to 1hr)
Replace or fix the board and replace the battery and you've got a really great laptop. As it stands right now it does well if you leave it on a desk plugged in. I only experience the graphical issue when I lift it up from the front area in and around the palm rests. I paid $150 for it a month ago so I'd like to get something near that. I've seen replacement boards on eBay for as low as $50. If you have the means then reflow wont really cost anything. I'm open to trades for equal or partial cost of the T40. Let me know!
