Free ThinkPad R50/R51 Recovery CDs

#1 Post by cnelson » Thu Feb 17, 2011 2:55 pm

I have the following set of five Recovery CDs titled "Product Recovery CD for ThinkPad Type 1829, 1830, 1831, 1832, 1833, 1836". These are various models of the R50, R50p, and R51.
- Disc 1 of 5, March 2003, P/N 01R9086, XP-P, EN, FRU P/N 01R9062
- Disc 2 of 5, March 2003, P/N 01R9110, XP-P, EN, FRU P/N 01R9062
- Disc 3 of 5, March 2003, P/N 01R9134, XP-P, EN, FRU P/N 01R9062
- Disc 4 of 5, March 2003, P/N 01R9158, XP-P, EN, FRU P/N 01R9062
- Disc 5 of 5, March 2003, P/N 01R9456, XP-P, EN, FRU P/N 01R9062

I have never used the CDs, but they appear to be fine and were stored in an office environment. They are available to anyone who wants them and will pay for the shipping (from ZIP code 87111).

If still available, I can also use the link to ISOs. (R51, and may work with my x40.)

Thanks.
Moved to Chrome OS, so... SK-8855 USB Keyboard

I would love the Recovery CD's as well. I read from another post this will work on a T42 as well. I'm trying to fix a laptop for a semi homeless guy who has no $$ for discs.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

A while back I emailed the OP to get these ISO's and will confirm that they work, or at least worked fine on a T41 machine and a T42 machine.

Only troublesome part was getting the machine (Windows) activated immediately after the restore completed. Had to boot into Safe Mode to get the nic driver installed, then everything went well afterwards.

Thanks!!

Unless someone else beats me to it, I can locate them and put them in either dropbox or google drive. Might take me a day or so though

This is what I would like to know as well. I have been looking for an OEM installation ISO, and I am guessing this has all the needed drivers as well. But I don't want any of the other Lenovo / IBM "utilities" (crap and bloatware).

FYI, I am downloading all 5 of these to my server should that DropBox link ever disappear. And I will try and remember to report back on my findings, if no one chimes in before then.
Maintning and upgrading a few aT4x/R5x on the cheap! :) They are truck mounted in my landscape company. I have some PCs and Android devices as well.

From what I can see from the DropBox links, these are copies of the original restore disk set. So they will contain "bloatware" to some extent. It's fairly easy to remove stuff (Norton AV, excepted from my experience). After installation, you should probably run Service Pack updates as well. Once you get the system to your liking, clone or backup it up so you'll have a better starting point when you have to re-build the system again.

I have not done this yet on a Thinkpad. I had some more specific questions about it in another thread about how to do recovery process here:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 78#p726778

Would you mind chiming in over there anything else you may know about this?
