Might be a long stretch, but looking for T60 for less than $150. This is for a 9th grader in Vietnam to learn English using computer software. Doesn't matter what specs, but should be functional and cosmetically adequate. Let me know what you have. Thanks.

$150 seems a little low for a T60, but someone else mentioned that ThinkRob has a T60 available. I would send him a PM, otherwise there are some listed in the marketplace for $300-$350.

Yeah, I realize that it's quite low, but that's the family's budget, so I can only try to help them get the best bang for their buck. I'll try to PM Thinkrob, thanks.

T4x series might be a better fit? Can get a decent one of those for closer to $100, pretty sizable price jump up to the T6x.

There is actually an R51 listed in the marketplace. That would also be suitable I imagine.

R5/6x may be better, espeically considering the T4x gpu issues. the R series is generally cheaper, and provided you get a R5x with intel graphics it should last for quite a while (YMMV ), and they are still solid, durable machines which are worthy of the thinkpad name - they are probably the best bang for your buck.

I got a very nice SXGA+ T60 for $140 off my local craigslist last week and passed on another for $150, only because I had no use for it.
Check the Bay Area CL. Someone in San Jose has one for $199 but also has lower spec'ed T60s for less (or so he claims).

Good luck, it's doable - if you don't need it today.

Yeah, I've seen a few T60's a while back for around $150 on Craig's list (when you don't need them, they're all over the place lol). Since there's no immediate need, I'll just look there from time to time. I guess it's not good to look for bargains here, as most Thinkpad enthusiasts tend to perceive their stuff to worth more than market price lol.

I am sure you will be able to pick one up but as you said, maybe not here. These sold locally recently: T60, R61i

If you spend endless hours on eBay and Craigslist, you will find a <$150 T60 within a week or two, but is it worth it? Let's say you spend 50 hours on this search -- that's over $300 in minimum wage!

No, I wouldn't say that they percieve their stuff to be worth more, but that the equipment they are selling is in better condition than the norm, and is priced accordingly - you can get steals with systems without batteries/hard drives/ac adapters, or you can get a fully loaded system for a bit higher price - the end result is that the seller has put more effort into making sure that you get a system that works as well as or better than advertised (ie. you are less likely to get someone's old junker being sold "as new")

Or you can search on ebay every few days, put in your highest bid and see what happens. Searching doesn't take endless hours. If it took more than 15 minutes to find the all of the available item you are looking for then you are doing something wrong.

You misunderstood me. If you rely on bidding, you won't get the best deals. To get the best deals, you look for Buy-It-Now items. These items get snatched within a minute or two. So, you have to keep refreshing your search results several times a minutes, for many hours in a row. As soon as you see one listed, snag it. Many people do this, and I did it for a while several years ago. The vast majority of the very best bargains that you find in the completed listings were Buy-It-Now items that people snagged in this manner.

On Craigslist, the best bargains also get bought within minutes. I have sold hundreds of times on CL and there were several times when I asked for way too little money. Each time, the buyer showed up to pick up the item within minutes.

The examples I gave, and which you responded to, were bidded items. My point is that you can get what the OP wants by bidding and it does not require a lot of time or effort.

One of my relatives has agreed to let one of his extra laptops go to the child for the price asked, so this thread can be closed. Thanks so much for all your PM's everyone.
