FS: ThinkStation D10 chassis - price drop

#1 Post by erik » Tue Aug 23, 2011 12:30 am

SOLD!!!

up for grabs is my personal ThinkStation D10.   it's a little over three years old with close to two years of warranty remaining on the 5YR on-site plan.   overall condition is absolutely mint.   it's clean inside and out and has lived in a low-dust, smoke-free environment.

it's still very potent for most CAD/DCC work and should last the new owner quite a long time.   it would even make a great file server for a low-acoustics environment.

ThinkStation D10 6427-CTO

- (memory has been sold)
- system planar (dual LGA771)
- 1000W power supply

- 5YR on-site warranty   (good until 06/2013)
- original box/shipping materials included, all in pristine condition
- personalized support via lenovo forum thinkstation board :P

above configuration is negotiable.   i will consider removing components if desired.

asking SOLD!!! CONUS via UPS ground.   will ship worldwide at buyer's expense.

It was a good price initially, it's an even more good price now... if only another moment... it's the configuration I liked to have since years.

Erik - very tempting as I bought an immaculate D20 carcass from you a while back - I'd happily vouch for you as a seller. The D20 is still in excellent condition and now stuffed with 24 GB and dual quad cores. I think the D10 has a lot more flexible on-board SATA/SAS support - I ended up adding an Areca RAID card to the D20.

I had a few questions:
You mentioned removing components - it seems like only the likely thing that could be dropped is the video card, right?
Are the two CPU heatsinks also included?
Does it have a floppy drive or the media/flash card module in the 3.5" bay?

I have a bunch of idle FB-DIMMs along with a couple of E5160's but also had a question on those - the knowledgebase on the lenovo forums (http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkStatio ... a-p/402959) doesn't list those as supported CPUs in a D10 but the HMM does list them as one of the possible CPUs - I guessing they are supported, yes?

Just curious - what replaced the D10 for you? And have you heard of anyone successfully running Mac OSX on a D10 (as a hackintosh Mac Pro - not for me, my wife insists on using it)?

glad to hear the D20 is still serving you well. :)

standard fansinks are included.   i might be persuaded to include the high-quality heatsinks for a bit more.   they keep the procs slightly cooler and look a lot better.

no floppy or media card reader are included.   the 3.5" bay will have a factory cover and bracket though.

GPU is included but could be dropped if desired.   i'm flexible.

i'll include the two original 512 MB FBDIMMs simply because i don't need them.   i forgot to put them on the list.

if the HMM lists E5160s then they'll work.   i checked on dual core LGA771 procs not long ago and didn't recall seeing them on the list.   apparently i need to look again and update the KB. :P

RAID is MUCH more flexible in the D10.   it would make a killer file server due to that fact alone.   i've always been a fan of LSI controllers and this was one reason i kept the D10 over the D20.

i replaced this with a ThinkStation C20 a couple months ago only because the C20 was so cheap.   otherwise the plan was to keep the D10 another 2 years.

no clue on OSX.   i've used it within virtualbox but not as a main installation.

Could you clarify the heatsink differences between standard and high quality? Maybe links to some photos?

Hope you will excuse some elementary questions, but this sounds like a good unit for my "experimental" work with operating systems, etc.

What is a "system planar"? Is that the same as a mother board?

Does this machine NOT come with processor(s)? If not could they be installed, and how much?

Does this machine NOT come with RAM? If not could RAM be installed. Say... 6-8 gig.

In Googling this unit, it appears it is pretty quiet. I need a quiet machine with no CPU whine or whistle or fan roar. (I'm easily annoyed)

No HDD is OK. I can install Windows 7, which I assume it will run just fine.

Does the Lenovo site support drivers, etc. for this D10 unit?..and does one get all that the usual way via System Update, or manually?

Is there a video card, or is the video integrated on the mobo?

Thanks for the help!

this thread should help on info, drivers, etc.: http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkStation ... d-p/204414

system planar = 'IBM speak' for motherboard

no processors are included -- i sold the pair of E5450s to ThinkRob last week.

i'll include 1GB of RAM unless someone wants the 16GB i have available for $225 before it ships out to a server recycler.

it's absolutely quiet and runs in the 24-26db range.   hard drives are typically louder at idle than the box itself.   my workstations sit about 3' from my ear and wouldn't last long if they weren't quiet.   frankly, the D10 seems quieter than the C20.   the C20 is rated at 24db and touted as the quietest thinkstation to date.

win 7 is no problem.   i ran server 2008 R2 enterprise on the D10 since it was in beta.

video is via a discreet card and this setup will include a quadro FX 370.   this system can accept almost any video card using up to two 6-pin PCI power connectors as long as there's enough ROM space in the BIOS.   most modern nvidia workstation cards will work, along with some desktop cards like the geforce GTX 570, 560 Ti, 550, etc.
