My t61p mainboard is scrapped. No, not the nvidia chip, but the mainboard completely.
Does anyone have a mainboard with the new chip new/used? Preferably in Europe, will consider USA.
Shipping to Holland.
Thanks

So your machine has following characteristics according to Lenovo Quickpath information at
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US:
Code: Select all
ThinkPad T61p (6457-5GG)
T7700(2.4GHz), 2GB RAM, 100GB 7200rpm HD, 15.4in 1920x1200 LCD, 256MB nVIDIA Quadro FX 570M, CDRW/DVDRW, Intel 802.11agn, Bluetooth, Modem, 1Gb Ether, UltraNav, Sec Chip, FPR, Turbo Mem, 9c Li-Ion, WinVista Ultimate
Obviously you are looking for a perfectly matching mainboard with FRU 42W7653 (for Merom CPU's like your T7700) or even better 42W7877 (additionally supports also Penryn CPU's).
Unless you have a definitive need for the "nVIDIA Quadro FX 570M" from either of these mainboards, there is no reason to refrain from using a standard T61 mainboard with either FRU 42W7652 (equally takes your T7700 Merom CPU) or FRU 42W7876 (also takes Penryn CPU's), which "only" has a "nVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M" GPU. Indeed, at the time of writing these lines,
FRU 42W7652 is readily available from Lapstore. Either buy that one, or check back often with Lapstore. Before ordering any of these nVIDIA boards, make sure to ask the vendor for the production date printed on the GPU itself. It should be any date starting at "08302A" (read: "30th week of 2008", which is the first week of August 2008) or later. Any nVIDIA GPU produced before this deadline still has the infamous bug, and should definitely be avoided.
Other than that, if you don't really care about GPU performance at all, i'd rather replace the broken board with a non-nVIDIA one featuring an Intel X3100 graphics chip. They are not only much cooler and considerably less power hungry, but also are not prone to fail like any T61 nVIDIA GPU produced before August 2008. Being aware of this context, buying a mainboard with such a nVIDIA GPU would only be a waste of money, IMHO.

Thing is, I DO use the graphics heavily... so I am "stuck" with a 570M.

i, too, have a dead T61p..
i had a case # and sent it in for replacement of the GPU but it came back, still dead, with the note that it did not qualify for repair of the gpu even though the mfg. date is before the gpu bug cutoff date..

Richk,
I am something of a novice to all this but I have a T61 (6460-7EU) that has the Nvidia chip in it. I believe it has failed as they are strange square shaped artifacts on my screen. They habe been there for about 6 months.
Do I understand that you have a motherboard replacement that might work. I would probably prefer the same motherboard with a "safe" nvidia but would also consider a motherboard with the intel integrated graphics. Is it safe to assume that the motherboard with integrated graphics (as opposed to nvidia) would fit into my laptop case?
How much do you want for the motherboard? Also if I pay you extra can you do the installation? If so how much for that added service?
PS - I have upgraded the memory in my laptop. Will those same memory ships be usable by the motherboard with integrated graphics?
Please email me at **** EMAIL ADDRESS REMOVED****** & THANKS!
Best regards,
Ronnie
