CANCELLED!!! Set back the HDD and decided to keep the SSD.



The X220 I ordered from the Lenovo outlet (will arrive 9/9/11) and is equipped with a 128 GB SSD (not the Intel upgrade). Since I will be using an Intel 310 mSATA 40 GB for OS and a Hitachi 320 GB 7200 RPM 7mm HDD for storage, I would like to sell the SSD that comes with the X220.

The drive will be brand new, but I will use it just long enough to clone the recovery partition and OS partition to the Intel mSATA.

Looking for $150 obo

Well, well, a little effort/bit of Google'ing may perhaps shed light on this:

If looking at the System service parts - ThinkPad X220, X220i it seems that one of the following Lenovo-branded 128 GB SATA SSD's may be received:

Model/type 4286-27x,4287-2Cx, 2Dx, 2Ex, 4290-2Lx, 2Px, 2Sx, 3Ax are supplied with either FRU 45N8081 or FRU 45N8007 or FRU 45N7981

According to these images of the FRU P/N 45N7981 this SSD is a Samsung (2.5") 11S45N8076Z1ZJH9122P0K.

According to this page and this page the 45N8081 is a (470-series) Samsung while this page lists the 45N7981 as a "HG3 THNSNC128GCSJ" and the 45N808 as a "SAMSUNG PM810 MZ7PA128HMCD-010L1"

The ThinkPad X220 Tablet and X220i Tablet - Hardware Maintenance Manual (Second Edition, April 2011) does not contain any further information.

Bottom line? A 2.5" SATA-3 GB/s 128 GB SSD of some kind...

I recently upgrade two new T420s machines for a client (to Intel 320 series 300GB drives!) One had the Samsung drive, one had a Toshiba. Since the T420s and X220 both take the thin drives, I would imagine it could include either of these, and possibly others.

Whichever SSD it is you can be sure it is one that will last some time. I have been using Lenovo FRU SSD's for almost two years in several personal ThinkPads and in many deployments and have not had any slow downs, failures or any issues whatsoever. I would feel very confident using any Lenovo FRU SSD. These SSD's are probably not the worlds fastest but they are stable and reliable.

I particularly like the FDE SSD's as when I spoke to several data recovery outfits they all said the same that without the password your data is unretrievable. Of course a mechanical drive with a password may offer the same or similar security. The newer ThinkPads have a BIOS setting that changes the key which results in a completely wiped drive. Easier than when erasing a mechanical hard drive.

It would work -- but if it's the 1.8" SSD, you would need an adapter for your 2.5" HDD caddy --

newmodeus (advertised at the top of Forum pages) has an adapter I have used, which works well:

The X220 models comes with 2.5" drives. However, as mentioned above, they are the thin variety, meaning 7mm thick vs. 9.5mm.

So, it will fit in older machines that take previously "normal" 2.5" 9.5mm thick drives, but it may be loose. The rubber rails should help hold the drive in place, but it won't be perfect.

Some manufacturers, like Intel, permit adding 2.5mm spacers to their 7mm drives (via the four screws holding the drive top cover in place). However, the Toshibas and Samsungs that I've seen do not support the addition of a spacer. Of course, you could always fashion one yourself!

Thanks underclocker for all the good info -- it is getting harder and harder for the non-geek (like myself) to be able to search out a bargain on an SSD for a favorite ThinkPad

I actually have a couple Samsung 128gb 1.8" SSD's I'm holding back to use whenever I find my next favorite ThinkPad in the MarketPlace -- but maybe they won't fit depending on which ThinkPad I end up with??

Should have no problem.
In my R60(15") i'm using a 250gig HDD thin 7mm. I put it in the caddy and with the rubber rails it stays in-place nicely.Not loose at all.The sides on the caddy is 9.5mm so the rubber rails fit nicely.And the 7mm drive screws into the caddy so no movement at all.
