Classic Battery—Positive Experience

#1 Post by kmasterk » Tue Jun 09, 2020 9:08 am

I recently get a refurbished battery for my venerable 755C from Paul, aka goldeneagle (memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=60882). Finding a "new" battery for this vintage is nearly impossible, but Paul's battery works even better than I had hoped. I use mostly WordStar 7 in DOS 6.22, with some tinkering in WFW 3.11, and am averaging about 5-6 hours per charge.

Not only does it work well, but it was a fair price, shipped quickly, and came with top-notch support.

If you are looking for a hard-to-find battery, or a refurbishment of a dead one, I highly recommend Paul's services!

There's actually a "trade secret" I'd like to learn about refurbishing the batteries.. How does one connect to consecutive batteries in a chain? It's obvious that you weld/solder wires to the first/last battery in the chain, but what do you do between the batteries?.. Do you use any solder there (if you're soldering not welding)?..

Sorry I've been kinda out of the loop.

I've done T2x batteries, but back in 2007! I think those, we reset the EEPROM that stored battery characteristics using a program called Smart Battery Workshop, done by a Russian developer. It was shareware, but the guy I worked for bought all the rights and then killed development afterwards.

The 600 batteries were crap then, and crap now. A lot of them actually have cells that amazingly can be revived. I think the problem is the piss poor battery management hardware from Panasonic. I can't speak to the aftermarket batteries, since they're completely different internally than the IBM OEM ones.

I rebuilt a bunch of packs, and they're all iffy on if they still work or not. I think I might've reused some old cells at the time, but the 600 packs are fairly straightforward for the most part.
