2022 Thinkpads
Re: 2022 Thinkpads
I'm keeping my eye out for what's coming next in the mobile workstation line. Currently I drive a P52 P3200 4K 64GB with 3x 2TB SSDs. It seems that the i9 12th gen might be a worthwhile upgrade and I do a fair bit of GPU-intensive stuff. I'd rather have something that packs a punch than thin and light, unless it can do both. P15 Gen3? I've seen the announcement for the X1 extreme Gen 6, but it seems it only support two drives. 8TB would work, but I'd prefer to move some of my current SSDs into a new machine than have to buy all new - so hopefully they stick with the same form factor.
Re: 2022 Thinkpads
Why not a Desktop PC? I realized long time ago that, if high performance or copious amounts of storage are a concern, then a laptop is a poor choice.zemlin wrote: ↑Fri Mar 25, 2022 2:43 pmI'm keeping my eye out for what's coming next in the mobile workstation line. Re: 2022 Thinkpads
Because I don't work in one place. I had a desktop and a laptop for a long time, but it was a constant battle keeping software preferences and data files in sync between them. Life is better when I'm just dealing with one machine. When I'm at home I dock this to my desktop peripherals and displays. I have zero desire to go back to a desktop.

I like the look of the latest gen P1, 16" 16:10 WQXGA and 4K options and centered keyboard.

I think you mean X1 Extreme Gen 5, not Gen 6.zemlin wrote: ↑Fri Mar 25, 2022 2:43 pmI'd rather have something that packs a punch than thin and light, unless it can do both. P15 Gen3? There is not gonna be a P15 Gen 3. Lenovo is changing the workstation line, instead of continuing with P15 and P17, they will release a ThinkPad P16 to replace them both. This one will use 16 inch 16:10 screens.

Correct - I got that wrong.
16:10 would not break my heart. The P52 is a tight fit in my laptop bag ... hope I can manage to get a P16 in there. There is not gonna be a P15 Gen 3. Re: 2022 Thinkpads
In the mobile workstation department it seems the new X1 Extreme is going to fit my requirements better than the P16. P16 only houses a single SSD and the X1 will support two 4TB drives. The lack of a keypad on the keyboard on the X1 is most unfortunate though. May have to sit tight for a while. The P52 still serves me pretty well.
Re: 2022 Thinkpads
The P16 is not announced yet. You are probably confusing it with the P16s, which is a renamed ThinkPad T16 with an ISV certified GPU.zemlin wrote: ↑Wed Mar 30, 2022 11:25 amIn the mobile workstation department it seems the new X1 Extreme is going to fit my requirements better than the P16. This is where I saw the info: https://architosh.com/2022/02/lenovo-in ... 4-and-p16/
Don't know that it's accurate though.
Re: 2022 Thinkpads
It is not accurate, this site misnames P14s and P16s as P14 and P16.zemlin wrote: ↑Wed Mar 30, 2022 1:39 pmThis is where I saw the info: https://architosh.com/2022/02/lenovo-in ... 4-and-p16/

You can find the specifications of the P14s and P16s here: https://thinkstation-specs.com/
Again, P16, the non-s full-fat version and successor of the P15, is not yet announced.

Re: 2022 Thinkpads
It's almost certain that the new X1E5 will have two m.2 2280 slots as this is the only standard to support 2x4TB=8TB total. 2280+2242 won't do it.

Re: 2022 Thinkpads
Has anyone seen any rumours at all since the ones months ago about a 30th Anniversary Thinkpad ? I haven't seen anything.
Everytime I get my T410s out for brief use I miss having that keyboard (7-row, "old" style Thinkpad keyboard). I don't know what the "new" style Thinkpad keyboards are like as I've never had one, but I do know the T410s is miles ahead of MacBook Pros that I use for work. The latest Mac keyboard seems to have less key wobble than some previous ones, the feel is a bit nicer, but the it's still way off the old Thinkpad ones. I think the absurdly short travel is to blame - they won't make the laptop all of 1mm thicker to improve this it seems, or maybe people really prefer these short-travel keyboards, but not me. Perhaps key-shaping also plays a part, current keyboards seem to have very flat keys, I'm not sure if this plays a role as well.

Re: 2022 Thinkpads
Slightly curious looking Thinkpad P16.
Re: 2022 Thinkpads
A lot to like. Not sure if the 'styling' is an improvement, but I don't get too hung up on looks. The rounded base could be easier sliding in and out of a bag, but the legs could do exactly the opposite - snag points. The legs will certainly improve airflow though. I support my P52 on a ruler when docked for the same purpose. I like the exhaust out the back.
A little disappointed that they removed a USB-A connector. I have two wireless dongles (mouse and Wacom tablet) which leaves one open on my P52. I'll have to upgrade my Wacom tablet to bluetooth I guess.
Just need to study the GPU options to see what level will provide the most bang for the buck. Not doing any heavy texture mapping/ray-tracing stuff. 3D CAD, photoshop, lightroom, and very limited gaming, and some video editing. My P52 has the Quadro P3200. Some of the photo processing plugs I use are GPU heavy, so those would benefit from a faster GPU. Will just have to see where the price tags land for those. Don't know if RTX features will come into play with my CAD graphics (PTC Creo) - not necessary for what I do, but could be fun to play with.
Don't think I'll opt for the OLED screen. I've been photo editing on IPS displays for a long time. I'm concerned that the increased contrast of OLED would be too much of a departure from the look of a paper print to be beneficial.
Re: 2022 Thinkpads
I think it's a *MAJOR* improvement. At least at this point, your laptop won't look like you use it while eating fried chicken anymore.
I'll eventually upgrade but my P71 is rolling along fine right now.
Glad there is a high brightness, HiDPI display option besides OLED. Can't pay that much to deal the pwm or the oversaturated colors.

It's unlikely to be anything but a rehash of the T25; this is, a regular T series with a classic keyboard. This is cheap for Lenovo (small budget) and probably enough to please the nostalgic folks.
I wonder if this is real:

Re: 2022 Thinkpads
I'm sorry to burst your enthusiasm, but the X220 can't run DDR3L at 1.35v (it runs at 1.5v and hot), and running one 8GB DIMM and one 4GB means asymmetrical dual channel, so less performance. RAM is so cheap at this point that I'd replace it with 2x8GB standard DDR3 if I were you.benlimanto wrote: ↑Sun Jun 26, 2022 8:13 amI can bring my X220 anywhere I want, and use ASUS A43SV at home.. as desktop with external keyboard and screen ofc.. Re: 2022 Thinkpads
I can come home from a weekend of photography at an Indycar race with 1TB or more of new data on the drive than I left with. Waiting for that to sync through a cloud connection would be no fun. Plus my mobile work is no less power-hungry that what I do in the office. I wouldn't be able to manage with an under-sized, under-powered, pansy of a machine when on the road.benlimanto wrote: ↑Sun Jun 26, 2022 8:13 amI just clone both machine, and have same software, sync via OneDrive with O365.
Re: 2022 Thinkpads
After many, many years of waiting for something really compelling, I've given up and bought a Mac. So, don't say I didn't do anything for you, the T30th is now bound to be a dense, minimal black slab of deliciousness with a 7-row keyboard.
Re: 2022 Thinkpads
As a minor positive to that development, does that mean there will be more choices than cheap Chinese brands that officially sell only in Taobao for M.2242 SSDs equal to or larger than 1TB?axur-delmeria wrote: ↑Thu Mar 24, 2022 9:49 pmYou probably meant M.2 2242 SSDs.
In any case, it could be a deal-breaker for some, as M.2 2242 SSDs are more expensive per GB compared to the more common 2280.
The quality of such brands of SSDs is not good, so I have not been keen on purchasing any until now.

Yes! Thank you Lenovo! An X1 with the "ThinkPad" sticker in the corner slightly changed. This is way less effort than even the low-bar set by the 25th Anniversary model. Good thing I didn't hang around waiting for this.
Re: 2022 Thinkpads
Indeed. The 25th Anniversary model gave some people what they wanted and couldn't get on any other laptop - a classic keyboard layout. Unfortunately, those people (myself among them) are not sufficiently organized as a group to come and speak to Lenovo in one voice and make them understand there is a potential market here. So, 5 years later, we get what we get.amardeep wrote: ↑Mon Oct 10, 2022 6:17 pmYes! Thank you Lenovo! An X1 with the "ThinkPad" sticker in the corner slightly changed. Re: 2022 Thinkpads
I'm still hanging on to my T440p until that eventually (not for a long time I hope) gives up the ghost.
And I have an X250 in my cupboard gathering dust, because I hardly travel nowadays.
However, since I use laptops only for email and browsing the web, and I also use a mouse instead of the trackpoint, another brand laptop (such as -dare I say it- a Macbook) could very well be in my future.
There is too much misery lately with LeNoNo.
