"abuse" a TP as VOIP-to-Analog Client?

#1 Post by jwege » Sat Mar 31, 2012 9:10 am

Hi all,

another, maybe very odd question (from the priciple, it could work, but in reality...?)

Here is my idea:

I have a TP running 24/7 as a litle server doing nothing 99% of its time.

In the same room, there is an older analog telephone system for which I have flatrates to allmost any destination I use.

Now, being away so much time, I am asking myself if it would be possible (and someone can give directions) to use my Notebook (another TP by the way) on travels to connect to the internet, to the TP at home and use this as a dial.out station on the telephone system?

So, in principle the following "stream" should be used:

Microphone & Headset --> my notebook

my notebook --> internet --> TP@home

TP@home --> built-in-modem --> telephone system (represents an analog phone)

I could even access the TP via VNC to start the dialing process there ...

Sounds too odd or sounds makeable?

Thanks for any hints!

Yes , you can and the software to do this should be free.

Take a look at

http://www.asterisk.org/

You can read about how one person set up their implementation here.
