Start Menu Shortcuts Needed - Urgent!

#1 Post by LavaChild » Fri Oct 05, 2012 7:20 am

Hello,

Can somebody please upload all of their Lenovo/ThinkPad/ThinkVantage related start menu shortcuts? I accidentally deleted the start menu folder this morning and I am trying to rebuild the list.

Thank you.

Maybe you can do a system restore to a point in time before you deleted it or...

1. the Start Menu folder is a "protected operating system file" and must be unhidden in Folder Options in the Control Panel.

2. right click on the start menu folder. it can be founs at C:\Users\your name\Start Menu and select "properties". Look for a previous versions tab.

3. If you find a previous version from step 2 that is dated before the deletion, you can restore that previous version.

System restore disabled and no previous versions available!

Can you tell me all of the Lenovo related start menu entries? A dump of your start menu folder would be great...

The entries depend on what Lenovo apps you have installed, and also on your laptop model and the OS.

Did you Shift-Delete it or emptied the recycle bin? If not, you should be able to restore it.

I shift deleted.

I have installed whatever came with a W700ds with Windows Vista Business 64.

I'd love it if you could help :(

Thanks.

Sorry, but I don't have a comparable system, nor do I have Vista installed on any of my ThinkPads.

Same here.

What you can do is go to the driver and software matrix for your machine, and see the list of applications. If you remember what you had installed, you can just recreate the shortcuts. You can also reinstall them all (manually or through System Update) and it will recreate them for you.

Hello!

Using some file recovery software I have recovered some shortcuts. There are a number which I have recovered the name for but not the file contents (such as where the shortcut is pointing!). Therefore, come somebody *please* either upload the following shortcuts or tell me where to find the corresponding icon.

Note that I am using Windows Vista Business 64 but I would be happy to accept help from anybody - I expect the install locations, certainly the executables, will be named the same.

Those that I require are:

Access Connections
Access Help
Active Protection System
Backup
Client Security Solution
Create Product Recovery Media
Creaet Recovery Media
EasyEject Utility
Fingerprint Software
Help Center
Keyboard Customizer
Lenovo Camera Center
Lenovo Fingerprint Software
Lenovo Registration
Lenovo System Toolbox
Lenovo ThinkVantage Toolbox
Lenovo Welcome
Magnify
Message Center
Power Manager
Presentation Director
Productivity Center
Rescue and Recovery
Security Configuration Management
System Migration Assistant
System Restore
System Update
ThinkVantage Productivity Center

I appreciate it may take some time to compile all of the shortcuts and/or their location. However I'd *really* appreciate it. The idea of re-installing everything makes me feel ill!

Thank you in advanced! :)

The Lenovo applications are typically installed under Program Files\Lenovo (or Program Files (x86)\Lenovo in the case of a 64bit system). I'm sure you'll find all the programs there.

Yes, that's correct. But many of the folders have numerous executables (e.g., presumably for tray monitors, the actual application, etc, etc) and in many cases the filenames do not make it obvious what the executable is (with respect to my previous list).

I understand it would be a significant effort but I'd really appreciate it if you could please find the shortcut directions for each of the applications listed. If not, please could you upload the contents of C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu and C:\Users\(user name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu. I'll then go through them myself. Please! :)

Thank you.

And it would be so hard to try a few of these executables until you find the one that actually launches the application? :)

Like I said before in this thread, I don't have a similar Thinkpad, nor do I have one with Vista, and the other Thinkpads I have don't have most of the software on your list installed. Sorry. :(

It really would be time consuming - if at all possible - and it also does not help if the shortcut calls the executable with a switch (e.g., -silent or whatever). I appreciate the fact you do not think you can help but even one or two from the list might help me. If you cannot do this though, I fully understand.

Is anybody else able to help? Please? :)

At this point, the easiest thing to do is probably reinstalling all those applications. :|

T61 Frankenpad in 15 inch T60 body, UXGA LED-lit AFFS LCD, T9300, 6GB RAM, NVidia NVS140m, Intel 6205, 128GB Crucial M4 SSD, 1TB HGST HDD + eBay caddy in Ultrabay

Reinstalling the applications is total overkill. The applications are installed correctly and are configured to my needs. My only issue is (because of my own fault) the shortcuts are deleted. Re-adding them is no problem if I know which executable relates to which program (and that they have no other switches, etc).

For somebody that has any or all of the applications I listed, uploading the shortcuts from the directories specified in my previous message will allow me to easily reconstruct the start menu - The version of Windows and ThinkPad model is largely irrelevant as even if the shortcuts do not work as-is they will give an idea of the relative location of the executable and any switches.

If anybody could upload any or all of the applications I listed that would be great. If you would rather save time I have no problem with uploading the entire contents of your start menu folders (directories listed in previous message) and I will sort through to find the relevant shortcuts.

Thank you! :)
