Future 3D printing for old IBM ThinkPad Parts

#1 Post by ThinkPad560X » Tue Dec 25, 2012 1:47 pm

So I watched some 3D printing videos and was thinking, This would be really nice to have if I ever wanted to replace a part of one of my ThinkPads such as a cracked/chipped base or LCD casing, Palmrest, HDD cover, maybe even keyboard keys, or even those missing doors that covered the back ports on those old 755, 760 ThinkPads.

They seem to $$ for me right now tho. What does everyone else think of this?

If anything we would need a cheap spray on rubber coating for those older models. Wouldn't it be hard to match the color and feel of vintage plastic with what comes out of a 3D printer?

From my limited experience with 3d printers, yeah. But I hardly think "colour an feel" would be the point of it. One would think the fact that you have the appropriate part without sacrificing an arm, a leg, your left nut and quite possibly a kidney, is miracle enough.

Meh, what do I know? I'm a cheap [censored].
