How shiny is YOUR keyboard?

#1 Post by t140568 » Thu Apr 11, 2013 11:24 pm

I've been using my T500 (with a solid t6x keyboard) now for nearly three years and have only a light shine on a few keys. I'm curious to see how fast/slow others' keyboards have become "polished".

Go ahead and brag! :D

Well I wouldn't say it is that shiny...
Then again, I had bought all these thinkpads used so they already had their use.
So it isn't MY shiny keyboard but someone elses.
(also kinda delighted to see I wasn't the only one who would use their right thumb mainly for the space bar)
I was somewhat dissapointed at the small shine they had had.
But now I stopped caring much, there are far worse keyboards out there.
The only issue that would bug me is the trackpoint being corroded or faded away.
But a surplus of trackpoints I have bought fixed that problem.

The 380Z Thinkpad however has no shine at all, just some scruffs on the body.
I've read somewhere on this forum that the x30 was one of the last thinkpads where they had a rugged keyboard that withstood many forms of type smashing.

Never mind 'shiny'. My mother in law manages to remove the letters from most keys by scratching them with her fingernails when she types.
An R becomes a P within days as she scratches away the right leg of the letter. Then it becomes a tiny O and then it is ineligible after a few months.
Unless you can touch-type it is eventually impossible to use her keyboard. A shine would be a bonus!

Touch type... maybe I wouldn't if I could not feel the ridges of the F and J keys.
There is always the Trackpoint to help "guide" you. 8)
It amazes me how how ladies can keep their nails at such a length and never crack them while typing. Well laptop keyboards are pretty sensitive... I wouldn't know how it would be with a mechanical keyboard or a Model M.

Maybe I should send her my keyboard to remove the Windows logo!? I'd love to have that thing gone. :D

My R60e keyboard still looks pretty good, but the X220i is starting to get some shine on the spacebar and a few of the keys, though I don't think I type on them any differently.

I hate shiny keyboards. I used to do desktop support a few years ago, and I hated sitting down at a customer's desk to fix their system and having to use their slimy, greasy keyboard / mouse.

I'm the kind of person who hates touching door handles though.

I buy all my Thinkpads used, and I always end up replacing the keyboard with a new one. The only exceptions were the X30 and the X120e, both of which were carried everywhere as daily drivers but never showed any keyboard wear.
