ThinkPad Machine Type - Model lookup table *PIC*

#1 Post by twistero » Wed Oct 29, 2014 1:49 am

As people have noticed, the new Lenovo support site have very limited support for Machine Type - Models lookups of legacy systems. Right now that feature is still available at http://support1.lenovo.com, but that website may be decommissioned at any moment.

Obviously I have to step in and save the day.

A python script and several days later I have scraped everything I could from the old support site's model selector. Only ThinkPads, though. 552374 models in total.

This file is a bit large for online services like Google Spreadsheets (400000 cells max), so unfortunately no quick online lookups. Someone who already have a database backend in place may consider hosting a copy and providing a search interface for it (or I can make one if someone pays the bill  ) But a complete offline copy works just as well.

Head over here to download an Excel spreadsheet containing the entire ThinkPad MTM database.

Admin edit: Added PIC warning since I added an image downthread.

Thanks for all the work! I imported the raw .CSV file into Access 2003 since Excel has a row limit of 64K. Sorted on Fields 3 and 4 and the list is in numerical order so it's easy to find whatever I need. Of course if I knew how to construct a proper query then I probably wouldn't have had to do this sort.

Wauw; truly another both outstanding and awesome effort by Twistero... greatly appreciated!!

I already downloaded the file, opened it with Microsoft Excel 2010 with no difficulties (although as mentioned by Twistero it's *big* containing 552374 lines), and I am able to search for all the models with no difficulties.

What a pleasure being member of such a friendly support-forum as this, and what a huge asset for the forum to have super-helpful and TOP-expert members amongst us such as Twistero!

Thank you, thank you, thank you - personally, I just wish I had, say, 1 % of your skills; man, ooh, how I'd then be clever!

Thank you good MAN. When they (Lenovo) wiped their databases i have felt both hands cutted off :( I don't know is a S/N lookup is working now (can be saved) but it is good thing too.

I know that this work needs some time - but maybe it is worth while to divide your xlsx-file (database) to parts for models (T60, T61, T500 etc). It produce many small files that can be uploaded to free hosting providers.

Made this into a Sticky. Thanks twistero! :thumbs-UP:

Once you have loaded this in Excel 2010, click on Home, then Find & Select (all the way on the right) and type in e.g. (7661-E17) and include the Parentheses.

In Excel 2003/2007, click on Edit, then Find and type in e.g. (7661-E17) and include the Parentheses.

Thanks for archiving this. The MTM of both my T61 and X300 showed an error on Lenovo's new support site, but is available in your excel file! :)

A member of the German Thinkpad forum has created an online program where you just type in the MTM, like: 2647-4MU and it comes up with the result.
http://sm.krelay.de/tp/index.php
The program was originally in German, but after I asked the programmer, it now switches automatically to English (depending on browser).

(the link was first posted here: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 90#p748390).

This is awesome!

Now if someone just makes a Mycroft search plugin for that site, it would be already much better than what we had with Lenovo.

Along those lines, I've just added a Firefox QuickSearch that taps into that database. As long as the MTM appears on a page, I can highlight it and perform the lookup. The URL to use when defining the QuickSearch to access that German site is:
http://sm.krelay.de/tp/index.php?type=%s
In operation, the "%s" token is replaced by the highlighted string. Thus, if 2647-HNU appears on a page (or even from this message composition box; but not from Firefox's own Search box), I highlight that MTM, right-click, hover over 'Search for "2647-HNU"... on', wait for the selection list to open up on the right, then click the "Thinkpad MTM lookup" entry. That opens up another tab at the sm.krelay.de site and the system description appears. Here's how it's setup in my browser's Quick Searches folder:

It comes & goes and it can depend on your location too. But that page will be gone forever for everyone in just a few more weeks.
Their new lookup (on the lenovo homepage) fails to find some models that the old lookup could.

So again, thanks to the contributors above for providing the complete MTM database lookup and the convenient interface to it. :thumbs-UP:

Great spreadsheet! thanks for doing.

I was also wondering if it holds the info on the type of display whether LED or not. I have the old PSREF and it does indicated if a particular models display is LED or CCFL.

Thanks!

I didn't know T500s with Radeon 3470 existed? An error in Lenovo's documentation perhaps? And then there's the mysterious R400 with Nvdia 9300GM. Amazing work.

I've just found this, what an amazing project! I'm trying to upgrade my T40 and T43 with a SXGA+ screen, and thanks to this have bought a 99p very ratty T43 with said screen fitted! Much cheaper than hunting out just the screen! (although knowing my luck it'll be in better condition than my existing T43, but that's a problem for when it arrives...)

It also enabled me to get rid of several scrap/cheap thinkpads from my watch list (bar a nice T42 that I may succumb to) because they don't have the specs I don't already have in another machine!)

Bit of a game changer this...

Hello!

Here is telegram bot for MTM lookup: https://t.me/thinkpad_mtm_bot

It is my first telegram bot, to build it I install linux on T60 (4:3 14'), learned Python and telegram API, and use serverless cloud function to host it. Was very interesting and exciting, returned to my student years :)

Please tell me about any errors.
Thanks for using!

Don't want to spoil your enthusiasm, but:
forbes.com wrote:Telegram's bots aren't secured using its encryption protocol, MTProto. Instead, the bot platform relies on Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol used in HTTPS web encryption – which isn't robust enough on its own.
In view of the current security and data breaches, I would advise NOT to even try this out!

And what exactly is the risk? Which data are you sharing with the bot? BTW, how is the connection to Thinkpads.com forums secured? Is it not the same TLS/HTTPS?

Security is an important thing for many people, I think. If you are already using Telegram, keep in mind that there is a MTM lookup bot.
I did it for myself, I will be glad if it is useful to someone. But no, no.

In any case, thanks to those who collected the information in the xls file.
