Re: Lenovo’s Promise for a Cleaner, Safer PC
Not a bad start. I can't think of other mainstream manufacters that don't include bloatware, though, the only brand new laptop I have ever bought was my W530
. Having a clean windows image with only the necessary drivers and security software would be a first. I think it would be even better if Lenovo allowed you to purchase a Windows laptop with only the required drivers installed and nothing else.

Re: Lenovo’s Promise for a Cleaner, Safer PC
First thing I do with every new PC is to format HDD, get rid of the recovery partition and install a new OS from scratch.
On a new laptop I would accept a Lenovo System Update (in a more user friendly variant) preinstalled. Nothing else

Get the serial number from your host machine using software or look for it underneath the laptop
Done
Re: Lenovo’s Promise for a Cleaner, Safer PC
My paranoia torwards Lenovo has been proved to be justified now.
No matter to what Lenovo has now been forced to promise for their correction - under public pressure only.

The only problem was that in my case Windows couldn't be activated online...but a quick phone call to automated activation system sorted it out in just a few minuteswaterloo wrote:Get the serial number from your host machine using software or look for it underneath the laptop

I'm curious... would you be willing to pay more for such a machine? If so, how much % more?Sleepy664 wrote:First thing I do with every new PC is to format HDD, get rid of the recovery partition and install a new OS from scratch.

Re: Lenovo’s Promise for a Cleaner, Safer PC
To be honest...as there is the option to download W7 ISO and use my product key, I'm willing to pay exactly 0 USD more. If there were no such option, let's make it 25 to 50 USD.sarbin wrote:I'm curious... would you be willing to pay more for such a machine? If so, how much % more?
I understand what you meant by that question. Laptop manufacturers make money on this stuff and that makes the machine cheaper for the end user.
So I have another option – load the machine with as much malware, crapware and spyware as possible. I'll get a cheaper machine (maybe even for free with the hard drive loaded to the brim) and I'll make a clean install anyway.
On a more serious note – System Update could contain a lot of trialware to install if the user wishes. And maybe not only trialware. I think there are ways to make it unobtrusive and profitable at the same time.
Re: Lenovo’s Promise for a Cleaner, Safer PC
The only time I did something like that was when I got my Amazon kindle. It was an extra $20 or so to not have advertisements come up on it. But on that device there was absolutely no option to change that after purchase.sarbin wrote:I'm curious... would you be willing to pay more for such a machine? For a laptop, I don't know why anyone would pay more money to avoid just a few minutes of removing bloatware. My time isn't that valuable. Besides, I would much prefer a Microsoft OS be an additional option, not a forced "convenience" for the consumer. I've been able to buy two laptops with Linux installed from the factory, but it is rare to find this both available and cheaper than Windows.
It is easy to add up a couple bucks profit per laptop from all the bloatware they add, but it is extremely difficult to quantify the cost of annoying many customers.

Re: Lenovo’s Promise for a Cleaner, Safer PC
I can imagine buying software on some more modern version of System Update.
New software could be just a few clicks and a credit card number away. Complete hassle-free install. It would get Lenovo some money, maybe even more than bloatware. And it would be a nice selling point. But it probably isn't this simple...otherwise someone else would be doing it already...

Re: Lenovo’s Promise for a Cleaner, Safer PC
I would imagine that Lenovo can get more money, if they sell some higher end accessories like Apple does.
