Linux Thinkpad: Taurinus X200

#1 Post by lophiomys » Fri Oct 02, 2015 4:31 am

Just read on German Heise.de about this FOSS modified Linux Thinkpad
by the New Jersy Company Libiquity.

using LIbreboot (Coreboot) and circumventing Intel's Management Egine.

https://shop.libiquity.com/product/taurinus-x200

Very interesting indeed!

For the European market there is a similar company: Ministry of Freedom in the UK.

They even offer a Libreboot T400.

I appreciate what they're trying to do and I realise freedom has a cost (a buck o'five?) but really, these are X200/T400s that are like $50 from my ex lease supplier... the guy I use cant get rid of his Core 2 Duo machines as these days people find 1st 2nd gen i5 etc. as too old to shift for any money.

Also I'd add that Thinkpads of that age have the most benign bios without any secureboot rubbish so they are 'fixing' something that isnt 'broke'.

I would think Linux Mint on a Thinkpad of that age is about the most 'free' machine you can get already.
