New X1 Tablet looks intriguing, I admit
OK, I admit, I am intrigued by the new X1 Tablet that Lenovo presented at CES.
Is there a thread in here already about this that I missed?
Here's Lenovo's product video:

I was interested in the Helix when it first came out, and I've also been following the X1 series. Some of you may know that I ended up going old school and getting a W520 - mainly for the classic keyboard - but I haven't stopped wondering whether I might make an X1 work and just learn to live with the new keyboard.
This new tablet has some of the cool features of the Helix that I liked as well as some of the nice features of the X1 Carbon. It sounds like it will have awesome screen options. And generally sounds like what might be simply a great machine all around.
I like the idea of this modular stuff that Lenovo seems to be working with recently. The Thinkpad Stack, for instance, piqued my interest, though I'm not sure I'll ever actually get a stack of my own.
The X1 Tablet seems to follow in this modular design direction and have both a battery option and a projector option that look easy to carry and well-integrated into the system. Both of those I could realistically see needing and having and swapping as needed.
Now whether I'll be able to afford an X1 Tablet in 2016...well we'll see how my business goes this year.
I just think that the X1 line continues to look promising. And I know there are a good number of folks on this board who have gotten fed up with Lenovo's changes to things like keyboards (me too!), and there are also some who decry the loss in quality and innovation since Lenovo took over the Thinkpad brand. But it is products like this one that make me think that hey, maybe there will be a Thinkpad brand for me to stay with over the next year or three.
Phil.

Obviously the most interesting part to it is the 3:2 screen. First one of such proportions in thinkpad line (correct me if I'm wrong). I'd be glad to get one, if only it was.... a laptop:) Thing is, convertibles are wobbly, how can you take this thing outside? Use it (I mean typing/writing) say, on a bus? Anyhow sitting on your laps? Nah... But yea, the idea itself is not bad, the modularity concept is good in any context, should be omnipresent. Why not.

Yeah, I'm not quite sure how the hinge mechanism would work in wobbly conditions. Or even just sitting on your lap instead of desk. But I like that the hinge seems to raise the keyboard up a bit and give it a slant - something that I have missed since I had a Thinkpad 760 in the 1990s. And in daily practice, I find that I almost never actually use a laptop on my lap: on the bus, I find I need a tablet format more than I need laptop - it is the only option when the bus is full and I want to use my laptop while standing. And for simple ergonomic reasons I find it uncomfortable to do any real typing work with any laptop sitting directly on my lap for more than 10-15 minutes.evening_hunger wrote:....if only it was.... a laptop:) Thing is, convertibles are wobbly, how can you take this thing outside? I guess there will be typical Lenovo component quality issues. Some OLED panels suffer from permanent screen burn-in so if Lenovo have chosen the cheapset available (see P50 and P70 screen issues) the product is spoiled.

You are confused, this thread is about the X1 Tablet, a model without OLED option. OLED option is on the X1 Yoga.Puppy wrote:I guess there will be typical Lenovo component quality issues. P50/P70 screens are not cheap.

Sorry, you are right. Too much modelsIbthink wrote:You are confused, this thread is about the X1 Tablet, a model without OLED option. OLED option is on the X1 Yoga.
There is the same panel (actually even older resvision) thats used in E560. Considering the P50 pricing it is definitely cheap component in a $4000 product. It is color space coverage is subpar.Ibthink wrote:P50/P70 screens are not cheap.

The 4K panel is not used in E560. Its exclusive to the P50, and it should have a very good color coverage.
The FHD IPS panels, yes, they are shared with other models. Nothing new though for ThinkPads, W540 also used the same FHD TN display as T540p, L540, E540.
But thats slightly off topic here. X1 Tablet should use the same 2160x1440 12.0" IPS screen as Miix 700, which uses a panel from Samsung with quite decent quality it seems: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-Ide ... 501.0.html
