WD Red for data drive in Thinkpad?

#1 Post by ThorOfAsgard » Mon May 22, 2017 6:49 pm

Are these safe to use as data drives in Thinkpads? https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product. ... 6822236600 (coupled with an SSD for an OS drive)

I'm not sure how they'll respond to the active protection system. From what I understand, the firmware in reds keep them spinning nonstop.

Probably not ideal depending on how mobile the system was that it's going into. Alternately the WD Blue has Secure Park and has low power consumption.
Lenovo state that Active Protection System doesn't work on non-primary drives.

In this day of age, just get a high capacity ssd. There drop resistant, no need to worry about failing anytime soon and there cheap now. Maybe if it was a 10tb drive then possibly but a 1tb ssd cost next to nothing now.

Just sayin.
The only acceptable use for a MacBook is to shop for a Thinkpad.
