That's a pain in the [censored] display(There's a possible upgrade panel but the connector is different, so it's a risky one).
That's exactly why I started to phase out my XGA displays on A30 and all my T4x machines and donated a 15" LCD's CCFL bulb to IDTech IAUX14S UXGA IPS. I can tell you that the minute I replaced my 14.1" XGA display with a 15" UXGA display on my A30, I loved my A30 2 times more and had the guts to replace its defective reddish backlight!
As far as the UXGA display on my T43p goes, that is actually one of the only things (Other than in terms of support of devices and ports) in terms of specs that are beyond average in today's laptop world! That CCFL bulb inside the IPS display lights just as bright as the 15.1" 1366x768 display on my T530!

The base 1366 displays are stupidly dim in 2011+ laptops. I powered on my broken T430's broken 1366 screen and the brightness was a far cry from the 1280x800 LED displays of T410.

Maybe the LEDs being dimmer increases their longevity?

Sure didn't help my T430 screen... pressure marks everywhere and half the screen is solid white.

My Qosmio G30 has a dual CCFL backlit 1920x1200 display, and it's still bright and really nice to look at. Big lid on that monster though... lol

Same big lid on my A30p. At least with the 15" display, the lid size seem reasonable, as the 14.1" lid is the exact same size and made the display look like a digital frame

The A3x was always meant to be a 15". The 14.1" was kinda slapped on as a cgeap option. The T30 was the REAL 14.1" laptop.

Exactly. I got my A30 as a base model with 256mb RAM and 14.1" display from a high school for free and turned it to its maximum specs

That is a common misconception. Matte vs Glossy finish has zero effect on color vibrancy, it is the panel makers who build cheap junk panels for office use, ie. Thinkpad territory, and those require matte screens for their anti-glare property because of harsh interior lighting.

I haven't read the thread, but this is basically a wild guess:

In terms of 4:3/ 16:10

15": was seen as the top of the line / and were mostly used desktop replacement or workstations, where power consumption was less of an issue, so therefore got the better display to satisfy that market - and those who dealt with graphics etc.

14": Sat in-between / someone how gained a reputation with vanilla office users that stuck, and being more portable display options were more dictated by battery life claims and hence got crappy TN panels.

12": Probably got good displays just because they were designed to be used as tablets as well. Maybe the smaller sized panel saved a bit of juice, and the overall machine was lighter, so they could cram a bigger battery in there and be less concerned with battery life claims.

I think when 16:9 came along, things just turned weird(er). Especially the early iterations of 16:9 coupled with WLED, crap colours, crap resolutions, people just trying to save a buck.
